1: Kibble Nibble: mewsings from the food bowl (editorial)

Okay, we're late again!  Our cats seem to be more
schedule-oriented than I.

My surgery went well and I am still in the "hibernation phase,"
of my recovery, easily tired, but otherwise doing quite well.

After the experiences I've had on yet another list I am almost
tempted to republish last month's article regarding how some
lists and forums suck.  The problem is that it only takes a few
nut-cases to make sure they don't understand what one says,
infuriating the rest of the group to do similarly.

Last month it was purposeful misinterpretation of an example of
cat abuse on one list.  This month, it was accusation of an
attack when I suggested on another list that not everyone on
the list was a rightwing Christian. Though I said nada about
my own beliefs, I was mercilessly attacked.  One comment I made
in return, was "It is much easier to pray for someone than to
listen to them."

Some people just could not believe the truth regarding the nature
of some of their posts.  They didn't seem to understand that my
post wasn't even about me; it was out of concern for others on
the group.

.......

Many years ago,when I was a nearly-to-graduate high school
student in the 1960's, my guidance counselor said "You know,
there are two things people are not going to like about you when
you get on further with life."  I dreaded what came next.  "You
are a boat-rocker and you are ahead of your time.  Some people
are going to be frightened and angry because of this."

I did not have the sense at the time to say "Well, now that
you've told me what they *won't like* what will they like?"
Supervisory adults are not necessarily equal-sided in their
pronouncements.

Another example of this occurred in seventh grade when the school
staff decided to give us demerits when we messed up.  You guessed
it; I received quite a few demerits.

At one point I remember having the courage to speak up at Student
Council, of which I was now a member (of course!)  stating "This
isn't fair!  If you are going to give us demerits, you ought to
give us merits too.  Otherwise, you're just punishing us but not
rewarding us."  The superintendent mumbled something about our
not deserving rewards, however, soon we had a more balanced
system.

So  Some have labeled me "opinionated," but, Teresa Heinz Kerry
to the rescue, who *finally* says:

I look forward to the day when women who have earned the right,
instead of being regarded as opinionated, are thought of as
smart and well-informed just like men.

My FMS Heroes Three
by Lauren Merryfield

A hero is a sandwich.  Heroin is a drug.  I would rather not
depend on either of them.

The only hero who has really been with me through it all, so far,
is me.

If I consider someone else to be my hero, then I have given much
of my empowerment and self-esteem over to him/her.  This is as
bad as a sandwich or a drug.

It would be nice if I could truly be enlightened enough to have
reached such a higher consciousness--however, I am not there
yet...

My heroes are three: Jaspur, Mikey and Gabrielle!

They always know when I have a good day or a bad one and they
just move around it.  They stay near me on the bad days--the days
when humans want nothing to do with me.

My three heroes know nothing of the name of my situation but they
do seem to be aware of some of its issues.  Sometimes they accept
it all better than I do.

Jaspur, Mikey and Gabrielle are my sweet, ornery cats!

The Morning Ritual

by Margy Ohring

We go downstairs when every day begins,
for you can't start a day without your food.
The one who trips me is the one who wins,
but if I fall, I won't do you much good.

Now, wait until you are completely down;
don't arch your back when you are half-way there;
mid-staircase pauses will cause me to frown;
I'll not be graceful sliding through the air.

Go wind each other if you must, my friends,
please do it all three steps ahead of me;
you won't like seeing me head over ends,
my tumbling, bumping should not cause you glee.

Tripping me up won't put food in your dish;
my landing safely should be what you wish.

Hamlet's Cat's Soliloquy

To go outside, and there perchance to stay
Or to remain within: that is the question:
Whether 'tis better for a cat to suffer
The cuffs and buffets of inclement weather
That Nature rains on those who roam abroad,
Or take a nap upon a scrap of carpet,
And so by dozing melt the solid hours
That clog the clock's bright gears with sullen time
And stall the dinner bell.
To sit, to stare Outdoors, and by a stare to seem to state
A wish to venture forth without delay,
Then when the portal's opened up, to stand
As if transfixed by doubt.
To prowl; to sleep;
To choose not knowing when we may once more
Our readmittance gain: aye, there's the hairball;
For if a paw were shaped to turn a knob,
Or work a lock or slip a window-catch,
And going out and coming in were made
As simple as the breaking of a bowl,
What cat would bear the household's petty plagues,
The cook's well-practiced kicks, the butler's broom,
The infant's careless pokes, the tickled ears,
The trampled tail, and all the daily shocks
That fur is heir to, when, of his own free will,
He might his exodus or entrance make
With a mere mitten?
Who would spaniels fear,
Or strays trespassing from a neighbor's yard,
But that the dread of our unheeded cries
And scratches at a barricaded door
No claw can open up, dispels our nerve
And makes us rather bear our humans' faults
Than run away to unguessed miseries?
Thus caution doth make house cats of us all;
And thus the bristling hair of resolution
Is softened up with the pale brush of thought,
And since our choices hinge on weighty things,
We pause upon the threshold of decision.

(Editor's note:  In The Literate Feline, one of the lists for
members of the Cat Writers' Association, I was introduced to Tim
Thompson, whose music inspired by his cats is PURRfectly the
Cat's Meow!  I loved the clips from his website, promptly ordered
the music and my family just loves it!  Tim and I have exchanged
links on our catly sites, and an article he submitted appears
below.  Come and enjoy!

Not only does his music encompass the humorous antics of our
cats, he offers a beautiful, heart-felt "In memoriam" to Clyde,
thus creating a lasting memory of his beloved cat.)

----------------------

A Classic Tail-- Musician takes his cue from tuned-in cat
Submitted by Tim Thompson

What do computers, cats, and classical music all have in common?

At first glance, nothing.  But if you are resourceful, like
artist, Tim Thompson, creativity comes from the most unlikely
places.

Applying unique programming techniques to a QuickTime Musical
Instruments synthesizer and Roland XV-5080 Sound Module (they're
computer-controlled synthesizers), Tim has composed a special
blend of electronic and orchestral music that spans the entire
classical era-and then some.

"I've put together variations on many classical styles, from
Gregorian Chant to Mozartian minuets, but I've put my own
contemporary spin on them," he says.  According to Tim, his
synthesizer programming creates tones and sounds that are
non-existent on traditional instruments. The result is a
romantic and rich polyphonic sound that puts the listener in
the very heart of his virtual orchestra!

So where does he draw his inspiration?  From none other than his
great cat Clyde Big Paws! Folks on the Internet the world over
know and love Clyde from his Web site: ClydeSight2.0!, and fans
are well aware that he was one extraordinary cat! What a surprise
to discover that he was mewsical as well!

"I noticed that my cat, Clyde, had positive reactions to some
musical tones and negative reactions to others--and sometimes
just plain indifference," says Tim. "I knew well from my study
of cats that they have incredible hearing-- they can hear four
octaves higher than humans!

As a musician, I knew that musical harmonics occur in this range.
We humans merely "feel" them, but the cats actually hear them.
So by watching Clyde, I knew when I had the best harmonic
combinations.

That's how I got the idea to use only the sounds and arrangements
that he "approved"-to see what I would come up with."

The result was the album "Symphonia Felina"-a nice collection of
new classical music compositions that please the ear and stir the
senses.

The album has a strange and charming affect on both humans and
cats! The humans take delight in the selections, and sometimes,
when they are in the right mood, so do the cats! Perhaps Clyde
tricked Tim into sending them his own feline message hidden
within the music.

It kind of makes you wonder where classical maestros of bygone
eras got their ideas from.

Fans of the award-winning website, ClydeSight 2.0!, are already
familiar with the music, as it is the soundtrack for the site's
popular games and stories (the Adventures of Clyde the Cat).
But in case you are out of the loop, a specially created
synthesized voice comes on before each number and gives a brief
explanation.

Musical numbers include the dramatic Toccata Temporal, Clyde
March (with unmistakable Elizabethan harmonies), and the Rocking
Melodian-a lively 19th-century style organ and orchestra piece.

Ok-so the music was inspired by a cat.  And was in written as
themes to the cat's adventures on the website.  But Tim has
even gone so far as to say it was composed by Clyde. How come?

"Well," he says, "since the musical concept was such a radical
departure from anything heard before, I was a little concerned.
I claimed the cat was the composer in the beginning in case
people didn't like the music-I figured I could always blame
Clyde! But as it turned out, the opposite was true. Site visitors
adored the music and asked for the album.

Naturally, I had to give Maestro Clyde the credit. And, I wonder,
if he could actually write music, might he have done exactly what
I did?-- for he was in my heart the whole time, for every note
and measure."

Tim started playing classical music on the piano at age two and
his love of music grew from there.  He has performed in Choirs,
Renaissance Ensembles (playing recorder) and Madrigal groups
(renaissance chorus).

Not only does he compose and play music but he builds instruments
as well.  He has been both an apprentice and master pipe organ
builder in the Boston area.  He has also built clavichords,
harpsichords and restored 19th-century reed and pipe organs. The
influence of all this musical training is clearly apparent in all
his work as he draws on his experience to deliver a sound that,
as one album owner wrote:

"... is bright, fresh and irresistible. It's catnip for the
ears."

Subject: Cat Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Development of New Product Revolutionizes Previous Cat Care
Principles

If you look at any animal welfare or pet care website, they will
advise you to keep your cat inside. Many adoption centers and
breeders will only sell cats to homes that will keep them inside.
The reason is simple; indoor cats live up to five times longer
than outdoor cats. However, veterinarians are citing obesity as
a growing health concern among cats. Increasingly more and
more cat care professionals are letting their cats outside due to
a new product from Benners Gardens. The product is a top to
bottom virtually invisible cat fence/enclosure system.

"We love our fence. Our 40+ cats are enjoying every minute of
being outside, it gives them a real break from being inside."

(Dixie Dixon; Blue Bell, PA)

Until now, it was virtually impossible for cat owners to safely
allow their cat outside without having an electric barrier or
standard wooden or chain-link fence with a roof type device
installed on it to keep cats from climbing out.

The new "Houdini-Proof" Cat Fence System allows cat owners to
set up a safe, outdoor enclosure of whatever size they want.
Cat owners would be able to fence off anything from a small
area to their entire property.

There are several unique aspects to the "Houdini-Proof" Cat Fence
System. Made out of a flexible, lightweight, polypropylene mesh
grid, the fence is easy to install and doesn't ruin your view.

The flexibility is also one of the key factors in making Benner's
Friendly Fence "Houdini Proof." Cats don't like to walk or climb
on unstable surfaces. For this reason, most cats won't even
attempt to climb it. For those escape artist cats, however, the
mesh fence turns back in at the top to force the cat back to the
ground.

This system is employed at cat shelters with up to 60 cats. This
system has also been used as an enclosure for feral cats.
Despite all of this, there has not been a single escape to date.

With feline obesity becoming a growing concern among
veterinarians, a Benner's Friendly Fence allows cat owners to
provide their loved one with the exercise they need without
having to worry about predators, death or injury by vehicle,
feline leukemia, distemper, or FIV.  As mentioned earlier,
this product is revolutionizing how cat care professionals give
advice. Check out
www.friendlyfence.com

3:  Bizcat Skills

The Power of FEAR - by Cathy Bryant

-----------------

Copyright 2003
http://www.homebizjunction.com

Why is it that so many people SAY they want to operate their
own business, but then fail to take any action when required
to do so?

Fear.  Pure and simple.

They're afraid.

Afraid of failure.

Afraid of losing money.

Afraid of what others may think.

Afraid of having to alter their lifestyle to accommodate
their new venture.

Afraid of all SORTS of things.

Well, here's a fact that may surprise many of you who find
yourself thinking, "That describes me perfectly.  Wish I
were unafraid, like the people who have already begun a
business of their own."

Do you think those of us who own our own businesses AREN'T
AFRAID?

Don't kid yourself.

Those of us who operate our own businesses go through the
same mental anguish that the fence sitters do.  We're
afraid of the very same things.

So what makes it possible for us to put the FEAR aside
and go on to do what needs to be done in order to achieve
our dreams of entrepreneurial freedom?

Simply this -

The PAIN of being tied down to a job that we hated and
being unhappy with our present situation was greater
than the FEAR of failure.

When you get to that point in your life, you will KNOW.

You will KNOW that you have no other choice but to take
action.  To stop finding all sorts of excuses why you
can't think about doing anything until tomorrow.  Or
until next week.  Or next month.  Or next year.

Have YOU reached that point yet?

How Not To Market

by John Colanzi
http://www.thesimplesystem.net/cashflow.html

I really don't get it.

Why do so many marketers shoot themselves in the foot?

It takes time to build an online presence.

Why do so many marketers go out of their way to lose business and
credibility?

They do everything they can to destroy any chance of doing
business with future customers. In many cases they not only lose
a future customer, they destroy their reputation.

Some ways not to market.

1. Subscribe to an ezine and every time the publisher sends out
their newsletter, play email tag and hit them with an ad.

Do you think you'll make a sale?

I doubt it.

2. Use forged headers in you email.

What are you hiding?

If you don't want me to know who you are, why in the world would
I trust you with my money?

3. Send me an email saying,  "You're receiving this message
because we are both members of the same opt in list."

Since I don't belong to any safe lists, you've started your sales
letter with a lie.

I'm sure you'll get my business. I love sending money to people
who lie to me.

4. Sending those bogus pyramid letters.

They are illegal and I'm sure I want to flood in boxes with
illegal chain letters.

Wake up!

Here's what mailing one of these letters shows:

A. You know nothing about doing business. If you did you wouldn't
be wasting my time and yours.

B. You either don't have a clue that these schemes are illegal or
you feel you have to break the law to make money.

So use any of these methods of marketing and I seriously doubt
you'll get many sales.

Why would anyone buy from you?

If you're too dumb to know any better, how can I make money
investing in a you?

If you're a scam artist, I know you aren't getting a dime out of
me.

Do yourself a favor. Build a real business.

Don't show your ignorance by using any of these schemes.

Save yourself some time and do business the right way.

Once you lose your credibility, you may never get it back.

Wishing You Success, John Colanzi

Kitty-cat hanging from the clothesline from three big

Some sort of small fluffy doggy in a bowl on top of a food scale:
"Don't be overly concerned with your weight, it's just a
number!"

Little brown doggy with a Pooh shirt and hugging a toy honey jar:
"Indulge in the things you truly love."

Kitty somehow stuffed down inside a large pop glass:
"Always try to see the glass half full."

A furry kitty and a little chick:
"Meet new people, even if they look different than you."

Little puppy hugging a bamboo plant, sort of up the tree:
  "Remain calm..."

Donkey hanging over the edge of the roof covered with snow:
  "...even when it seems hopeless."

Kitty hugging the computer mouse, asleep:
  "Take lots of naps..."

Black and white kitty on its stomach looking weird:
  "RELAX!!"

Doggy with its head looking out through crack in an old
building:
  "Keep your head up"

Little puppy sitting on a bright motorcycle toy:
  "Enjoy expensive toys often."

Another with its head in a paper sack:
  "Never be ashamed..."

Very tiny baby gibbon or something wrapped around a human finger:
"There is always someone who loves you more than you know."

Kitty with both front paws all bandaged up:
  "It will get better"

And one trying to break through a fence with its teeth showing:
  "Give it your all"

Kitty with eyes wide open and tongue hanging all the way out:
"Be weird whenever you have the chance"

One cat springing through the air getting ready to land on
another:
  "Always be up for surprises."

Cat on hind legs holding its hands together:
  "PRAY"

Too old mutts curled together:
"Love someone with all of your heart."

Picture of a cat on a small park bench on a postcard with
saying,
'What a week this has been...':
  "Cherish every Sunday!"

Kitty and doggy rubbing noses:
"Love your friends, no matter who they are."
