Kibble Nibble: mewsings from the food bowl (editorial)
Okay, we're late
again! Our cats seem to be more schedule-oriented than I.
My
surgery went well and I am in the "hibernation phase," of my recovery, easily
tired, but otherwise doing quite well. The four days in the hospital
seemed like more than a month and fortunately, when I got home, I was able to
sleep in my own bed, conking out immediately. There's no way to get
much sleep in a hospital unless they put you to sleep.
The kitties
have been somewhat PURRturbed that my tummy is off-limits as a resting place
or take-off and landing pad. When I lie on my stomach, I protect this area
with a pillow, just in case.
Gabrielle has been the most insistent,
though I now believe she is pawing my abdomen and lying near it as a means of
protection and nurturance. She's hung around me more than usual since
I've been home.
Maryah, who figured out I could not reach clear to the
floor, approached me in standing mode and even stepped up onto the
first step of two into our tub, making it easier for me to pet
her.
Mickens steered clear of my middle by staying up on my
chest, flopping onto my right shoulder, as he usually does. But oh,
his joy! the other day, five weeks out, when I could allow him
to prance on me again!
Jaspur has been fleetingly protective, too,
avoiding understanding that this area is under reconstruction.
When I
figure out a reasonable way to handle the spam in my inbox, I am sure things
will be on more of a schedule. So far, none works well enough to know
which emails I consider spam and which ones are those I consider
legitimate.
Well, here we go, catlovers, with July's
edtion! *******

2: Kitten Kabootle's Kubbyhole (catly
writings)
Lower Than A Stray Cat by Lauren Merryfield
Like many
of you, I am on several online groups. Now and then we discover what
some might call a "troublemaker," who seems to be there just to reek havoc,
draw attention to themselves, etc, often obscuring their true identity in the
process.
This happened a few days ago on a cat-related list. When
some of us reacted to the negative posts this person chose to believe that
we were attacking her personally. Among other things, she said she felt
"lower than a stray cat." This description really touched a raw nerve
in me.
Taking this term literally, I protested; insisting that
stray cats are just as valuable than any other cats; in fact, most of us
receiving CATLINES have taken in at least one stray kitty in our
lives.
One such stray for my family was Rafael, whom we nicknamed
Ralph. He was named after a favorite Spanish teacher at the
time.
Ralph showed up one day on our front porch, nameless,
tagless, half-grown, but wearing a rope-like flea collar. He seemed
quite tame, allowing us to pet him immediately.
We gave him food and
water out on the porch, but soon my sister and I let him in. He was
just fine with this and, in fact, when Mom placed a cardboard box containing
kitty litter in the middle of the kitchen floor, Ralph happily leapt in and
did his thing!!
Where did Ralph come from? Did he belong to someone
else? We put a lost cat ad in the paper, deciding that if no one
claimed him after two weeks, he was ours.
Ralph was ours--or we were
his--for 19-and-a-half years! This is an amazingly long life span for
an indoor-outdoor cat; the kind most of us had back in the
1960's.
Life isn't easy for stray cats. Many who became tame enough
for my sister and me to handle would be around for maybe 3 or 4 years, if
that. Back when I was little, cats were normally not allowed in our
house, however, Minerva made it in there to have her litter of kittens in our
dirty clothes basket behind the basement door. I remember the tiny
mewings!
Dub, short for W.K., short for Wild Kitty made it inside and
I remember how he would rest on the heat register between our diningroom
and livingroom, thumping his tail, proud of the metallic thud it made and the
laughter this elicited from us.
I've thought about Dub frequently the
past few months. Our youngest, Maryah, reminds me of him in many ways,
her coming to us as a skittish feral being one. Another is that she
makes a similar rolling meow as she darts past me or near me, just as
Dub did, as he passed by my sister and me, slightly closer to us every day
until we could finally reach out to pet him.
A third way in which Maryah
reminds me of Dub is that as she rolls around on the floor, purring up a
storm, she has added tail-thumping to her happy routine, which makes me
laugh, just as Dub did.
I could go on about other strays who have come
into and out of our lives, however, my love for those whom I've known causes
me to flinch at the idea of someone saying they feel "lower than a stray
cat," and my suggestion would be: get some counseling so that you feel equal
to a stray cat and then bring at least one in to love and
enjoy!

3: Bizcat
Skills
Why Free Discussion Boards Suck ;) by Terry Dean & Kirt
Christensen <terry@bizpromo.com>
I've seen a lot of destructive things come down the
pike since I started marketing online in '96...
...But, hands down,
the biggest potential time-waster, the biggest source of discontent, envy,
hatred and malice, all wrapped into one place
is...
Free Discussion Boards!
Let me
clarify, and don't "tune me out" before I explain.
:)
In the
*right* setting, I'm a big fan of discussion boards.
...Usually that
means that the board is operated inside a password protected directory, like
in paid membership site, or where posters are carefully screened and
moderated by the board owner to keep out riff-raff and losers.
But,
that's it.
In most cases, the free discussion boards that abound
online are at best a massive time-suck, and at worst, an obsession that
keeps you from getting anything done and drive you out of
business.
The reasons are simple, but before we get to that, let
me tell you a personal story:
Never, Ever
Take Business Advice from Someone Driving a
Gremlin!
A few years ago, during my college days at BYU, there was
a financial "network marketing" company going around that had a lot of
"followers".
One of my friends from my freshman dorm joined, and went
at it whole-hog.
He rented an office, he paid his money to go to all
the conventions in Hawaii, he paid to get licensed, he paid for the
brochures...
And He never made a single dime!
Not
one.
...And he kept at it, trying his best for over 2 years.
He
also drove a beat-up AMC Gremlin and was pretty much flat broke!
Can
you imagine the difficulty of his task?
Trying to sell financial products
to middle-class families, but when you show up to their home for your
appointment -- you get out of a Gremlin???
In a face-to-face
situation, it's common sense that you would weigh somebody's input and
opinion on financial matters by their own financial success,
right?
It's just obvious.
So why is it that when that this
guideline just goes out the window when we talk about "free discussion
boards"?
Let me give a few appropriate examples, with all the
names changed to protect the guilty ;)
On one *very* popular Internet
Marketing discussion board, the number of posts made by each member is
tracked...
Along with the date they joined, a little bio about
them, and a link to their website.
Doing a little research I found
something shocking...
Two of the top five most prolific posters have yet
to make any real money online...
How do I
know?
Simple:
A) Neither one has an operational website B)
Between the two of them, they have made over 5,000 posts C) Both of them have
even asked for financial donations -- right on the board!
Now,
something doesn't add up here.
The board is supposed to be about making
money online, and you would *assume* that if someone took the time to
make over 2,500 forum posts (which both of them did) they'd have to be
making *something* online, right?
Wrong!
When it comes to free
discussion forums:
The More Someone Posts, the
Less Chance There is That They Have a "REAL"
Business Online That Makes ANY Money!
Now,
there are exceptions to this, but I can name them on one hand.
(The
board owner and a *few* truly benevolent successful marketers that try to
lend a hand when it's needed..)
It would be funny if it weren't so
sad.
Most of the people posting are "wannabes". They spend
all of their disposable income buying the latest ebook, the newest SE
software, and then they go on the forums to dispute and argue the relative
merits of each...
...And they never even bother to DO anything, or get
any of their grandiose ideas off the ground, or to test out the ideas that
they read.
Don't fall into the trap of wasting all of your
productive hours monitoring, reading and posting in that type
of environment.
Forums are addictive, so be careful.
Here are
the only free discussion boards that I'd recommend visiting and occasionally
interacting on:
1) Anthony Blake's Entrepreneurial Success
Forum
http://www.ablake.net/forum2)
The Warrior Forum
(This one isn't actually even
a free board. You're supposed to be a member
to be able to access it, but it has a gazillion
links to it in any search engine.)

What
Are Blogs? By Sharon Housley (c) 2004
What are Blogs?
Having
heard the term previously but not having paid much attention most are just to
afraid to show their ignorance and ask the question, what is a
blog?
Lets face it; the term blog does not conjure pleasant
images.
Blogs are web logs that are updated regularly, usually on a
daily basis. They contain information related to a specific topic. In some
cases blogs are used as daily diaries about people's personal lives,
political views, or even as social commentaries.
The truth of the matter
is that blogs can be shaped into whatever you, the author, want them to
be.
Email Marketing from Your Browser - Affordable and
Simple!
Where Did Blogs Come From?
The roots of blogging can be
traced back to the mid 1990's. Who the very first blogger actually was is
unclear, as the art of blogging did not really take hold until 1999. The
original "weblogs" were link-driven sites with personal commentaries.
The very first blogs were human guided Internet web tours. While initially
thought of as diaries or online journals, blogs have evolved into the latest
fresh web content.
The Future of Blogs
A buzz word in techie
circles, "blogging" is the wave of the future. Whether its a fad, or proves
to be a new way to communicate with existing and potential customers it
deserves at the very least a cursory look.
Why is Blogging Helpful to
Businesses or Individuals?
Just as animated .gifs were once cool,
blogging is the trendy thing to do. That does not mean that it is not
beneficial to businesses. Webmasters struggling to keep fresh,
attractive content on their websites to lure visitors back, have found
blogs the answer. Content is a necessity for online businesses, both for
purposes of being found by search engines but also because it gives visitors
a reason to come back.
Start Earning Residual Income With Your
Website!
Having established that blogs are not only trendy but
also beneficial to businesses, its important to understand how they can be
used to your advantage.
We currently manage and update three blogs on a
daily basis. The first is our new business blog at:
http://www.notepage.net/blog.htmThis professional business blog allows us the opportunïty to
tell potential, or existing, customers industry news, updates,
or generally how mobile or paging software can be used in
specific situations to alleviate problems. The bottom line is we
control the content. It's updated daily, which increases the chances that
search engines will spider on a regular basis and it helps with page rank
because it's been submitted to all the logging directories. Initially started
on a whim we've found it beneficial to report tips, tricks or make visitors
aware of new regulatïons related to the mobile or paging industry.
The
second blog we manage is at:
http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/blog.htmlThis blog is less formal and contains marketing tips,
or promotional advice for software developers or online marketers. We
found that we had overflow from our monthly newsletter. Generating a daily
blog would require very little effort and would assist us in creating fresh
content which our readers told us was of significant interest.
Get
high rankings in Google and Yahoo! Clïck hëre!
The third blog is a
combination of both styles and contains tips for small businesses. The small
business blog is located at:
http://www.small-business-software.netBlogs & Your Business
The bottom line is you need to determine
how a blog will benefit your business, determine a schedule and adhere to it.
Let your readers know what to expect and when to expect it. Blogs
provide great supplemental content and direct attention to areas of
your business that you want to showcase; you direct the content but let
your readers guide you.
Creating a Blog
There are numerous online
tools that can be used to create a blog. We found that because of security
concerns, it would just be best to use a standard html program. In our case
we used Dreamweaver and create daily posts.
It's really not much more
complicated than typing an email. The content is then sent via FTP to a web
server. If you want to test the waters there are online web-based tools that
help you publish to the web instantly. The most popular web-based tool is
likely Blogger.
Other Advantages to Blogs
While you may
initially create a blog for your existing customers, you may find that you
can attract new customers by illustrating your expertise in a specific field.
There are numerous websites that act as "blog search engines". Be sure
to submit your sites to these websites to increase your exposure. This
will also help with your page rank and possibly increase the likelihood you
will receive decent ranking with Google. You can also create an RSS feed in
order to syndicate blog content and gain additional exposure.
