1: Kibble Nibble: mewsings from the food bowl (editorial)

Hi, Cat-loving Home-Business PURRSons,

All unilateral optimists, you might not want to read this; never

say you weren't warned.

My husband, Jim, has been in and out of the hospital (mostly in)

for the past three weeks. He has had an intestinal hernia, for

which surgery was necessary; the spread of bacteria which is

usually okay in the intestinal tract but not okay when it spreads

throughout his system; minor, but damaging heart attacks; bladder

problems, due to a large abscess among other pockets of

diverticulitis, which re-filled after he came home, so he was

readmitted; blood transfusions since his hematocrit was too low

(they thought he was bleeding internally, but now they say he

just is not producing enough red cells, due to extensive

infections); and, I may have forgotten some.

He has a transplanted kidney which is doing great, in spite of

the stress, and his teeth are still good. (hmmm, how did he

manage that?)

I have had occasional transportation to visit Jim in Seattle, a

ways from home, but once I am there, I feel I am not of much

help, though he says my just being there is important to him,

even when he's half zonked out.

I've nearly finished several two-layer pot-holders, the only safe

kind when crocheted, but who knows if I will actually finish any

of them off, lol.

I discovered that I could order groceries from Albertsons.com so

this was a major blessing, since neither of us can lift much and

this is particularly great for ordering cat litter, pop (some

call it soda) and other heavy items. There is a delivery charge,

but probably it is less than it would cost me to take a cab to

get groceries, and much easier than going around the store with

an employee, locating each of the items I want, and then having

to carry them in once home.

Though our Walgreens pharmacy nearby does not deliver, I was in

dire straits one day, in need of one of my medications which had

run out, and, aware that Jim was in the hospital, one of their

techs brought the item to my door. I reeeeeeeally appreciated

this, since going to pick up meds would have been another cab

fare.

Okay, I might need to explain that at one time, I lived where

there were sidewalks, our stores and restaurants were only blocks

away; my daughter's preschool and elementary school and our then

church were all within walking distance. I was able to be much

more independent then. Perhaps Jim and I could have given a

little more thought to my particular needs when buying our

current home, however, I knew it was where Jim wanted to live,

and I wanted him to be where he felt best, knowing that his life

might end before mine.

However, I am not so sure about this last thought; he really may

outlive many of us. If he were a cat, I wonder which of his nine

lives he would be in at this time? He has way outlived any

predictions of medical personnel, however, he is one who may give

out at times, but does not give up!

Reading the mail has been problematic too, since I have not yet

learned how to use the scanner on my system. Taking piles of

mail to the hospital for Jim to peruse has been okay except for

some urgent items. Today's pile was mostly junk--yea!

The cats are quite subdued when I come home alone, like, they

want to say "How dare you come home without our daddy--again!

REOW!"

We won't talk about my birthday; suffice it to say that Jim and I

will celebrate my "unbirthday" some time. If Alice in Wonderland

can do it, why not I? (or is it me?) lol.

The past three weeks have seemed more like three months, and if I

had not been blessed with the company of my three feline sweeties

and their antics, I don't know how I would have survived.

The medical dudes are hinting that Jim will come home tomorrow,

Saturday, the 18th (yes, I know CATLINES is a few days late,

sorry.) I told him I'll believe it when he's really here, this

time.

Thank goodness for being able to talk frequently on the phone

with Jim and to Instant Message with our daughter, Lynden!

Email has served us well, too, since I can quickly send Jim

updates to family members and close friends.

Well, enough of our latest saga; let's dig in to CATLINES!

Subject: National Feral Cat Day Oct. 16 & trap dangers

Hello all,

I just wanted to remind everyone about the upcoming National

Feral Cat Day on Oct. 16. This is a fantastic time to educate

people about the benefits of Trap/Neuter/Release as a humane

method of controlling cat populations nationwide.

Please take a moment to check out Alley Cat Allies at

www.alleycat.org

They have a wealth of information about this program, and how you

can best introduce this program into your neighborhood. They

will also send you a media package, if you are interested, and

they have a ton of free info in .pdf formats for you to use in

your quest to enlighten the masses.

Also - just a sidenote... Awhile back I ran across a cat that had

been trapped in my area and left in the trap. I of course

tracked down the owner of the trap. While they were well-meaning,

they did not understand that when trapping ferals, the traps

should never, not for one single second, be left unattended. This

is a perfect opportunity for some cat-hater (or even a coyote) ;)

to grab the poor kitty. Also - it is just flat out inhumane.

After fully "educating" this person, I'm certain it won't happen

again (under penalty of death). I just wanted you all to remind

your newbie volunteers and well meaning neighbors about this very

real danger.

Thanks much!

LAUGH A LITTLE

The Question: "How Many Dogs Does It Take to Change A Light

Bulb?"

1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've

got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about

a stupid burned out bulb?

2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring

that's not up-to-code.

3. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!

4. Rottweiler: Make me.

5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the

dark.

6. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light

bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please,

please, please!

7. German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these

people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any,

and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has

tried to take advantage of the situation.

8. Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing

off the walls and furniture.

9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see

a light bulb?

10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet

in the dark.

11. Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb.

12. Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there.....

13. Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares?

14. Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a

little circle...

15. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll

do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will

be dry.

The Cat's Answer: "Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change

light bulbs. So, the real question is: How long will it be before

I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?"

House Calls for Your Pets

Aug 13, 2003 7:55 am US/Central

CHICAGO (CBS 2) Doctor Joseph Hahn's practice keeps him moving,

literally. His veterinary clinic is on wheels.

He sees every one of his patients at their home, allowing him to

give his four-legged friends one-on-one attention.

"Cassidy, come here. Hi Cassidy. Hi honey. How bout a kiss?"

And, a remarkable level of care.

"Awww, good girl. Good girl honey. Ok, let's see what we got in

here."

Now, you might think your pet couldn't possibly get the same kind

of service they could at a more traditional stationary clinic,

but wait until you see inside Doctor Hahn's van.

"Ok, we are going to see what's in this ear"

Doctor Hahn has a lab, a fully stocked pharmacy, x-ray

capabilities and even a surgical suite.

"It's something that has been around for a few years, but it is

only recently that this type of technology has been available

where you can really fit an entire practice in a vehicle like

this," says Dr. Hahn.

That's why more of these units are starting to spring up.

The Chicago Veterinary Medical Association says two now patrol

suburban streets, and next month a vehicle called the Animobile

will start showing up in Chicago neighborhoods. It's in

partnership with Chicago's Commision On Animal Care And Control.

"We'll do spay, neuter and vaccinations out of the Animobile,"

says Joy Degani of Friends of Chicago Animal Care and Control.

"I have 3 dogs," explains Nancy Rogers. "One needs surgery and he

is going to come out next week and just do the surgery in my

driveway."

And, they say it takes a lot of stress off themselves and their

furry friends.

"She doesn't have the fears that she used to have when we would

go to the vet, the ride to the vet, she was always a nervous

wreck," says Terri Foelsch.

The service does cost a little more, but it's a price a lot of

pet lovers are willing to pay.

"It's worth it and a lot more," says Foelsch.

Animals As Teachers

by Marie T. Russell

Life surrounds us with teachers, if we are but willing to learn.

Actually, everyone and everything in our life is our teacher --

they teach by example of something we'd like to attain or

something we'd like to abandon.

One of my greatest teachers these days is my dog, Angel. He

appeared on our doorstep a year ago -- a tiny wet black bundle of

fur. It had been raining all week and he was huddled by the

doorstep trying to stay dry and get warm. I brought him in and

put a sign up on the street to let his human family know he had

been found. No one claimed him -- which was just as well since

after a few hours I was definitely in love.

Part lab and part chow he was cute, affectionate, and a joy to

have around. He was named Angel since I felt he had been brought

to my doorstep by angels to serve as my teacher, my friend, my

playmate, and my guardian angel.

In the year that he's been with us he has taught me many things.

He reminds me to take time to play, to go out in the fresh air

and walk (or in his case, run like the wind). He demonstrates

exuberance for life, he has a great capacity for joy, for

excitement, for pleasure. He reminds me when I've been working

too many hours in a row that it's time to take a break. He shows

me by example that one must drink a lot -- and I mean a lot -- of

water. He eats only when hungry, a few mouthfuls at a time and

then goes on to something else. He gets so excited, and I mean

so excited, when something wonderful is coming his way. Even the

routine of a morning walk gets him so excited he jumps for joy.

He's given new meaning to that expression -- he jumps, twirls,

and is so excited to go for a morning walk -- while I, am barely

awake, and going for a walk not only because I "should" but

because I "have to" take the dog out. What a difference in

attitude. He jumps excitely -- I drag my feet.

He has demonstrated to me, day after day, the importance of

loving life and living life to the fullest. When we go out on the

paths -- me to walk, him to run -- to watch him run back and

forth is such a pleasure to see as he puts "his all" into it.

He runs for the pure joy of it -- not because he needs the

exercise, or because his doctor told him he "should". He runs for

the pleasure of running, for the sense of freedom, and the sense

of adrenaline that fills his body. He runs to discover new

trails, and he runs with abandon on the old trails as well. He

doesn't care whether it's the same old same old, he's excited to

be alive and enjoying "being".

And he knows how to ask for love and how to accept it. When he

rolls over to be petted, he simply lays there and enjoys. He

accepts the love in the moment and then doesn't hesitate to come

back and ask for more whenever he wants more love and attention.

Many times when I'm working, he'll walk up beside me and stand

quietly. If I'm busy and don't notice him, he'll simply walk away

-- talk about respecting someone else's space. At other times,

he'll bring in his toys one at a time -- and when I've broken my

concentration on what I'm doing, I'll notice that I'm surrounded

by his toys. a silent invitation to come and play. He reminds me

that there is always time to play -- and the opportunities are

always there. He reminds me that I need to take short play

breaks during the day -- just to get up and stretch (he always

stretches when he gets up), to go say hello to the person in the

next room, to take a drink of water, or just to say "hey, I'm

here if you need me".

What a teacher! He has reminded me of the importance of taking

time -- for myself, to play, to laugh, to go out into nature and

enjoy the moment. He has reminded me of the importance of being

loyal to friends, curious and interested in strangers, and always

willing to explore new territories and adventures.

He reminds me to greet each day with a wagging tail (or a smile

in my case), to always be happy to see family and friends, to get

excited about going for a walk, about seeing a rabbit or a cat --

to be so delighted (and to show it exuberantly) when a friend

comes to visit, to enjoy life to the fullest, and yet also know

when and how to rest and relax to the fullest.

Angel Dog (his full name) is only a year and a month old

(approximately) and he is one of the best teachers I've ever had.

Since he's been in my life, I've rediscovered the beauty of a

free spirit. I now laugh a lot more. I take more time for me (and

for him). I take time to play, to go out in nature, to remember

to take short play breaks and short naps. He reminds me to stop

and smell the flowers, to always be interested in exploring life,

to start each day excited about going "out into the world" and

checking it all out, once again.

Whether you have a dog as a teacher or not, there are many other

opportunities to learn all these lessons -- perhaps you have

children who are great master teachers. They also are willing and

able to demonstrate all these lessons on how to live in the moment

and to enjoy life no matter what -- rain or shine.

3: Bizcat Skills

Hi,

Right after I fixed up the notes I had hurridly done after our

teleclinic, then later today I read this interesting comment:

Pay attention: If you want to recall something, pay close

attention to it at the time. The problem may not be memory, the

problem may be one of attention.

People who have a good memory, pay close attention to events as

they happen. Also, you may well know that the level of interest

and importance we assign to a person or an event, determines how

much attention we are going to pay it at the particular time it

is occurring.

(author unknown to this editor)

Thanks.

What types of products sell best?

Maybe a better question would be: "What type of product turns me

on?"

Remember, you are planning to do this on a full-time basis as a

transition away from the Corporate Trap of the J.O.B. (Journey Of

the Broke)

You want to be sure that whatever it is you do, that it is

something you can get excited about.

Something you can be passionate about.

Something you can be proud of.

So it wouldn't hurt to start with your passions and values, your

gifts and your experiences.

Answering the following questions should give you some initial

help in determining a direction for you to go in.

What values do I hold dear?

What am I passionate about?

What do I believe in strongly?

What hobbies do I love to participate in?

Where do I think I can make a difference?

What are the dreams I had as a young adult?

Why did I give up on those dreams I had as a young adult?

Are those dreams more possible now because of the Internet?

What business would I attempt if I knew I could not fail?

What types of unique skills have I developed that others can

learn from?

What types of "life experiences have I acquired that would be

valuable to others?

What types of services have I noticed that could really use

improvement?

In what area can I do something bigger, better, faster or cheaper

than the existing companies?

How can I improve an existing web-based service?

What is stopping me from daring to achieve?

What character trait or skill do people always say that I have?

How can I package my particular skills or knowledge and sell it

as an "information product"? Book, Seminar, C.D., Tapes, Video,

E-Book

All of these questions are designed to open your mind up and to

examine the possibilities that lay before you.

Let's face it, few of us think in these terms very often OR for

very long. Setting aside some quiet time to really think through

these questions should yield some great results.

Writing all of these answers on a large piece of paper or on a

"Dry-Erase" White Board should help you to see a pattern of

thoughts and a general theme to your life that (hopefully) will

point you in your direction of your life's work.

Isn't that what being a Home Based Business Owner is all about?

I believe it is all about engaging in your "Life's work", the

work you were destined to pursue, not the work that you were led

into by your:

Background

Education

Parent's advice

Teacher's advice

Friend's advice

Particular path in life

A serendipitous turn of events

Isn't it funny how we just sort of "fall into" the path our life

takes us on?

If we don't do anything to alter this path, we end up unhappy,

angry or bitter at how our life has turned out.

We are

"Too busy making a living to focus on creating a life"

The exercise above will focus you in on the business of choice,

for you.

The purity of a persons heart can be quickly measured by

"CATS ...lurk low,

leap high, hunt brave, hide shy,

blink warm, stare cold, play young, yawn old, crouch short,

strut tall, act big, sleep small. "

--Author unknown to this editor

(Editor's note: this is a note I sent to my husband, Jim, shortly

after the Seattle Mariners didn't make it to the playoffs.)

Hi,

Did you read any of these articles about Pat Gillick leaving the

Mariners? Well, there is one entirely unacceptable statement he

made, having nothing at all to do with baseball:

He said simply, "I've had a kick at the cat four times, and now

it's somebody else's turn."

reow!

Lauren

ps: That stupid statement appeared in two separate articles about

Pat Gillick, so he must have uttered those awful words more than

once, bummer, boo, hiss, growl, scratch and bite!

[The] defilements are like a cat. If you feed it, it will keep

coming around. Stop feeding it, and eventually it will not bother

to come around anymore.

The following ad in The Atlanta Journal is

reported to have received numerous calls:

SINGLE BLACK FEMALE seeks male companionship,

ethnicity unimportant. I'm very good looking

girl who LOVES to play.

I love long walks in the woods, riding in your

pickup truck, hunting, camping and fishing

trips, cozy winter nights lying by the fire.

Candlelight dinners will have me eating out

of your hand.

Rub me the right way and watch me respond.

I'll be at the front door when you get home

from work, wearing only what nature gave me.

Kiss me and I'm yours.

Labrador retriever.

5: from Outside the catbox

Hi, especially to our new readers. I have been receiving emails

from subscribers that say "ad for CATLINES" in the subject and

then a blank message. Excuse me, I cannot place an ad unless you

send it, however, please read above regarding our free ad board

where free ads may be placed.

I was receiving too many ads that sounded scammy or spammy to me

and the cats and they didn't pass our standards. (Gabrielle is

particularly picky in what is good dumpster material, which make

good toys, wherever they come from, and which are those to pass

on to me.) Thanks.

BIZLINES does publish all free ads sent in to those who are

subscribed, therefore, joining both of our ezines might be of

great help to you. Thanks.

LM

I want to thank those of you who have sent in such catly

writings, home-business articles and your having been so willing

to share them!

Keep sending them in!

PURRingly,

LM
