Happy New Year! Cat-loving Home-business
Persons!
It's that time of year again; letting an old yer go,
making resolutions which are rarely kept, being glad spring is on
the way!
Our trip to Nebraska was great, though it totally wore us out
and bugged the cats. Our daughter, Lynden, is now a graduate,
with honors, and is in that maze of job-hunting.
My sister is now
remarried, living in a new, large home, and things are looking up for
them. We spent precious time with our family and with friends we
hadn't seen for years--literally!
And now here we are, back home,
ready to get the first issue of CATLINES out to you.

.......
MAJOR DECISION:
I have made a decision
to give honorable mention to companies who respond affirmatively to making
their websites/books/other info accessible to blind persons, and to further
list any who have been less than cooperative. I think our cat-loving
friends need to know which businesses are worth our time and which are
not. I am not asking for a boycott of those who do not comply,
however, extra praise and buying products from those who are open
to accessibility issues might just make a difference both in compliance
and in noncompliance--and in having a heart.
Just as I would not
recommend any companies to you who are knowingly negative in any way to
animals, the same goes for humans. I consider unwillingness in the realm of
accessibility to be quite negative. And so do the cats!
Please
understand that MEOWS and REOWS apply *only* to anyone whom I have
personally contacted, given their subsequent response or lack thereof.
In addition, I am not expecting total perfection, by technical or legislated
standards; just what is helpful for the ordinary reader who uses a
screenreader, braille, audiocassette, or other means of reading the printed
word.
Let it further be understood that I am not
selfishly, me-orientedly, doing this! What works better for me will
work better for many other folks, some of whom are not
assertive enough to ask.
So here we go!!!
This month's MEOW
(praise) goes to:
http://www.albertsons.comfor making an accessible version of their website, in addition to the
main one which doesn't work so well.
http://www.DropShipSource.comWhoresponded immediately (they hold the record so far) to my requests,
working directly with their webmasters to make what had been an accessible
site "upgraded" to inaccessible, great once more!
http://www.housecat.comWhose
original site was great, but when they "upgraded" it became lousy! It
took longer for HouseCat to come around, but hey! they did it! And we
are now an affiliate (I refused to become an affiliate with them until
correction was made, though I did not plainly say so.
to Niki
Behrikiss Shanahan for making her book "eternal Animals" available to me to
read as an attachment;
To Josh Hinds, who, though concerned about having
links stolen from his page, is willing to make separate arrangements so that
a blind person can listen to his audios (the buttons are not labeled in
text, so a screenreader does not locate them.)
http://www.getmotivation.comTo
Randy Dr. Proactive Gilbert, to whom we wish "blue skies and rainbows," whose
site is already totally accessible, so that we can hear his great Inside
Success shows:
http://TheInsideSuccessShow.comThere are several who have intentions of doing so, such as
eBay, whose announcements will be made as soon as the accessibility comes
into effect and this editor is made aware of them. If yours is
accessible and you don't see your deserved MEOW praise here at CATLINES,
PURRhaps it is simply due to my being unaware.
So tell me!
Tell me
who isn't complying, too--such folks either need to be consciously made aware
of the situation, in cases when one really doesn't know any better; or, those
who know better but consider accessibility as low priority
.
This month's REOW (nays) To Tom Hua: http://www.ebookwholesaler.netWho
was too afraid of his materials being stolen to allow for a more-accessible
version of his ebooks--and I am a member, no less!
to Barbara
Thompson, whose weight-loss book is only in print and I am advised that they
have no current plans to offer an accessible version, but if they do, it
will be announced in their newsletter.
They do have a CD which is
accessible, however, this is quite an abridged version of the 250-page
book. I suggested to her company that not only would an audio of the
entire book be great for those of us who use screenreaders, it would also
be great for those who are listening as they drive, work out, etc. So,
the up side is that we have planted a seed. This can be quite
important. You never know. She might end up with a MEOW
yet!
To Ken Evoy, I am sad to say this because his materials are
so great! but his staff has advised me that accessibility to
blind persons is not a top priority. When they finish all the
more pressing work, they'll consider it. I've heard this kind of
"no" before. Again, a seed has been planted and Dr. Evoy is known
for his being positive.
May I say once more, Happy New (or is that
Mew) Year!
I am a contributing author to Allen and Linda Anderson's
"God's Messengers: what animals tell us about the Divine." Kabootle
has been commemorated once more! You may find the book at your
local
Barnes and Noble or other book stores.

I'm thinking on this one! One snag is that some companies want us to

aMEWSing way.

Mikey
and the Canned Food by Lauren Merryfield (A Mikey story.)
The
easiest way we could find to help all three cats, Jaspur, Mikey and
Gabrielle, adapt to Gabbie's need of canned food was to allow all three of
them to eat whatever we bought for Gabrielle's specific needs.
Before
now, as they were eating only dry food, my husband and I didn't pay much
attention to the order in which the cats ate, since the food is always out,
so there is no "me first!" mentality occurring.
Not so with the canned
food which is only offered at supper time and only left out for a while
(unless we forget.) Now it was interesting to discover how the three of
them managed to share one can of food.
Jim and I rarely interfere with
our cats' interactions, as we believe it is up to them to create their own
shared environment, to the extent that they can.
It appears that
Gabrielle and Jaspur appear first; Gabbie eating. Jaspur watches and waits,
sometimes joining her at the can/bowl; sometimes leaving, knowing there will
be food left for him.
Mickens, on the other hand, is our most laid-back
and evidently, most unassertive of the three. He shows up, stands back,
leaves, and I feel sad for him.
I do smell kitty-food breath on him
later, so I know he does get some canned food, but I worried the other day
that always being last might hurt his feelings and perhaps I needed to
"help," or is it "interfere?"
Last night we had run out of the
regular-sized cans of food, so we offered a smaller kitten-food-sized
can. Gabbie and Jaspur fell into place; so did Mikey--standing off a
ways--waiting.
I figured that opening a second can would be okay, since
these were smaller, so I offered a second can to Mikey who sniffed, pawed
around, and finally began eating.
Immediately, Gabbie made an about-face,
positioning herself to eat from Mikey's can. I put my hand in front of
her, keeping her backed off from Mikey and his can.
Mickens ate what
he wanted and left.
This afternoon, I heard an unusually terrible scuttle
among the three of them. It was the worst-sounding fight I've heard,
to the extent that I raised my voice and stamped my foot, both of which
are understood as "no." They quit momentarily but soon were at it
again. What was this about? I wondered.
I finally got it!
Yesterday I had interfered with their hierarchy, shown preferential treatment
to Mikey in front of the other two, and they were all three totally
unimpressed.
They were not only interested in showing each other, but
also their Mom, just how PURRturbed these 3 little cats could be!
At
supper time, I presented the usual one larger can, left them to their usual
manner, but asked Jim to watch them so I had proof that Mikey, though last,
was okay about it.
Jim later told me that Mikey did come later for his
share of food and seemed just fine. Evidently the three of them have
figured out how much food there is in a can, how much each kitty will
eat so that there is enough left for the others, and they have it
all worked out.
If only some humans could work things out so
well!
@@@@@@@
society is of two minds about pets. "We profess
great love for companion animals; we have nearly 60 million cats and almost
that many dogs," he said.
"We all know people for whom animals are a
huge part of their lives. But we are less than stellar in what we do with
unattended animals."
One who really cares about it is Marilyn Sansom,
an accountant and writer in Charleston, W. Va. In 1993, she became
involved in the issue when she rescued a cat named Ophelia. During
a blizzard, Ophelia's owner died without having made any arrangements for
the cat. Ophelia was taken in by a neighbor who quickly discovered that she
didn't like cats. So she gave Ophelia to a young man who worked in a local
grocery store. He kept Ophelia locked in a room with a caged python,
which terrified the cat.
Finally, the young man put an ad in a local
paper to try to get rid of Ophelia. Mrs. Sansom responded and has cared for
the cat, now 13, ever since. In 1999, she rescued another cat, a
Siamese named Simon, whose 80-year-old owner had also died. Simon was sick
and in a shelter - and about to be euthanized - when Mrs. Sansom stepped
in.
The stories of Ophelia and Simon are recounted in
"Ophelia's Winter" (1stBooks), which Ms. Sansom wrote in 2000 under
the pseudonym Sarah Ann Hill, which was her great-grandmother's
name.
The book offers practical advice for ensuring that someone
will care for your pet when you are no longer able to.
"Arrangements
really need to be made in advance," Ms. Sansom said.
"The pet owner
and the person who agrees to care for a pet need to know what they're getting
into.
"It's amazing," she added. "People leave wills that are
very detailed about rings and even inexpensive watches. But they make no
provisions for their
pets."

You were the advocate for all companion animals who faced
unhappy endings after an owner's death. From the "New York Times"
to Belgium and the U.K., everyone who read the story of "Ophelia's Winter"
found your common sense advice on planning for a pet's care if you're no
longer there.
Not many cats could boast that their misfortune helped the
cause of other animals, but your mission as an angel here on earth
was predetermined before your birth.
It is well known that cats choose
to accept or ignore any human beings they are forced to live with. For
that reason alone, I felt more than honored when I knew that you loved me,
too. I cannot put into words how much you'll be missed on
Christmas and every coming day. I'll always be your
mom.
Heartfelt thanks and appreciation are sent to Dr.
Sarah Stephenson and everyone at Good Shepherd Hospital for the special
love they gave to Ophelia. Thanks also to Dr. Karen Perkins and the
staff at the Emergency Animal Clinic.

TEN
THINGS A CAT THINKS ABOUT
1. I could have sworn I heard the can
opener.
2. Is there something I'm not getting when humans make noise
with their mouths?
3. Why doesn't the government do something about
dogs?
4. I wonder if Morris really liked 9-Lives, or did he
have alterior motives?
5. Hmmm... If dogs serve humans, and humans
serve cats, why can't we cats ever get these stupid dogs to do anything for
us?
6. This looks like a good spot for a nap.
7. Hey -- no
kidding, I'm sure that's the can opener.
8. Would humans have built a
vast and complex civilization of their own if we cats hadn't given them a
reason to invent sofas and can openers in the first place?
9. If
there's a God, how can He allow neutering?
10. If that really was the can
opener, I'll play finicky just to let them know who's boss!

The Cat User's
Manual by Andreas Ramos
User Installation and Maintenance
Documentation
CAT vs. 7.0: Completely Autonomous
Telepurronics
Manufactured by MOM CAT
System Design
SpecifiCATions:
User Friendly Mouse Driven Self Cleaning Energy
Saving Standby Mode When Not In Use Self Portable Operation Dual Video and
Audio Input Audio Output Auto Search Routines for Input Data Auto
Search for Output Bin Instant Transition (2 nanoseconds) Between Standby and
Full Power Mode
Production Details:
After basic KIT
construction, the unit undergoes six weeks of on site ROM programming and
burn-in testing. Listed features are installed during this period. Since MOM
CAT uses localsuppliers, there may be variations between
units.
Transportation:
A suitable transportation case should be
used for transportation to the operating site. Failure to properly ship a CAT
unit may result in loss or damage to the unit and/or serious injury to the
end user.
Installation Procedures:
Upon receiving the CAT unit,
the user should examine the unit to verify that all I/O channels are
operational.
Look for minor bugs in or on the system. Bugs are indiCATive
of the MOM CAT production environment. The user may manually remove any
bugs.
Bring the CAT to operation in an environment temperature at
70°F (±3° tolerance). Use a quiet room with the primary
user(s) present.
Open the transportation case and let the CAT unit
autoexit. Initialize the self learning program Katfind® by displaying
the input bins.
These should contain H2O (liquid state, room
temperature, 99% purity) and dry energy pellets.
Immediately
afterwards, display the output bin.
If the user already has a CAT unit
successfully installed, it may be possible to transfer BASIC routines to the
new CAT. For the first day or two, the CAT will stay in self learning mode.
When the learn buffer overflows, the CAT will autoswitch to
sleep mode. This is normal. The MMU system will store the new information
to permanent memory.
After 72 hours, the CAT will be interacting with
the operating environment.
The unit may be placed in direct sunlight.
CAT units are operational in all axis: standing, sitting, or laying down.
If all basic environment requirements are satisfied, the CAT system will
produce a slight hum. This is normal.
A new CAT should not exit the
primary site facility. Full portability comes after extensive burn in. Some
users never let the CAT unit autoexit the site. The advantages are longer
unit life and fewer bugs.
Contact with pirate CAT units may lead to
unplanned BATCH iteration.
Contact with untested CATs may lead to
virus infection. If allowed to exit, Fatal errors may happen. If you decide
to let your CAT out, it should have a READ_ME.TXT file with a
system address and URL which identifies the host site.
Your CAT should
have a system name. The name may need to be reinitialized repeatedly until
the system can read it correctly. This lets you issue Voice commands to bring
the unit to an online state. Many owners give Their CAT's a secret password
as well. You can also get the CAT's attention by booting the system. While
this is effective, it is discouraged.
AppliCATions:
At present,
there are few productivity appliCATions for CAT.
MOUSE is a killer app.
This is pre-installed.
Most owners use their system for game playing.
CATs play best when they are new. Older units suffer a system timing decay
which leads to reduced response and flexibility. Some CAT games
are:
CACHE = The CAT will CACHE a data string. Similar to the K9
unit game, but the object must be smaller.
JUMP = Move the data string
through the air. The CAT unit will reach new heights of
operation.
MIRROR = Place the unit in front of a mirror and watch it
attempt to parse itself. Some units may ESCape. Reboot the system
by calling its name.
CHASE = Played between two CAT units or a CAT and
a K9 unit. Units take turns as one is the data and the other attempts
to parse it.
DANCE and SING = Offer fishy data code to elicit a range
of audio output.
Maintenance:
CATs will self-recharge. This
takes 20 hours in a 24 hour cycle.
CATs are self cleaning and require
little user maintenance. Do not clean the unit with alcohol or benzene-based
solvents. This may lead to a violent explosion.
A CAT unit should be
taken once a year to a VET for a system checkup.
Do not attempt to
open a CAT. There are no user serviceable parts inside.
If a unit
emits unusual smells or sounds, it should be serviced immediately by a
VET.
You may examine the CAT system to determine if it has a male
or female SCSI port. If the port is male, then the CAT unit may emit a
non-toxic aerosol. The VET can remove this component. CATs with female ports
are plagued by periodic heating problems. The VET can fix this permanently by
removing an internal part. Such systems should run UNIX.
Warning
Notices:
CAT systems are normally user friendly. However, in
certain documented situations, a CAT may pose a danger to the
user. Repeated jamming or obstruction of I/O ports may lead to deployment
of auto-defense systems. Never attempt a first strike on a CAT system. Its
CPU clock rate made to mil specs and thus classified, but JANE'S FIGHTING
FELINES notes that a unit was seen by ham radio operators to be apparently
moving at 500 MHz. Twin D-shaped five-pin connectors have an average
seek rate of 3 nanoseconds. The manufacturer is not responsible
for injuries to the user.
Children should not poke anything into the
CAT's I/O ports. CAT may BYTE.
In dry, cold weather, a surface
electrostatic charge may build up. to avoid electric shock, stand on an
insulated surface.
Do not operate the CAT above water. This may lead to
end-user damage.
Carry the CAT firmly. Do not swing it by its
"tail."
If you properly care for your CAT, it will give you years
of loyal service. Many users get a second unit, to enjoy the ability to
run complex simulation games.
User Groups:
CAT users can find
other users and FAQ on the Usenet Newsgroup: rec.pets.cats.
Lifetime
Warranty:
The CAT unit is guaranteed against CATastrophic failure.
Nine coupons are included.
Documented Problems:
The Ctrl key on
most CAT units is defective. this may lead to serious performance
problems.
Do not install a BIRD unit at a site which has an operational
CAT unit. These tend to disappear.
System Features:
Models:
Main frame, desktop and laptop models (smallest footprint in the industry).
Available in 15 inch, 17 inch, and 19 inch sizes.
Interface: Touch
sensitive interface for maximum user friendliness.
Memory: Not much.
Upgrades available real soon now.
Expected Lifetime: 15 years (although
20 years is common).
Weight: 10 to 16 lbs... without optional
cables.
Speed: 3 nanoseconds search/find with self-uprighting

The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough
people to click on it daily to meet their quota of getting free
food donated every day to abused and neglected animals.
It takes less
than a minute to go to their site and click on "feed an animal in need" for
free.
This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors
/ advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food
to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising.
Here's the

3: Bizcat Skills
>From
Robert Short: Greetings ,
Are you ready to ring in 2004? We sure
are! The upcoming year holds so much more promise than ever before. The
future is ours to create, and what better time to start than right now?
What can we do today that will take us one more step closer to making our
dreams come true? Even if it seems like a small thing, just do it and
feel the joy that comes from gaining control over your future.
Some
New Year's Thoughts
Let us walk softly, friend; For strange paths lie
before us all untrod, For New Year, spotless from the hand of God, Is
thine and mine, O friend.
Let us walk straightly, friend; Forget the
crooked paths behind us now, Press on with steadier purpose on our
brow, To better deeds, O friend.
Let us walk kindly, friend; We
cannot tell how long this life shall last, How soon these precious years be
overpast; Let Love walk with us, friend!

Focusing
Strategies During Uncertain Times by Gary Ryan Blair
There is nothing
worse than uncertainty. Unmitigated certain disaster beats ongoing
uncertainty hands down. Disaster is dramatic. It inspires deep feelings and
provides an outlet for people to justify their fears.
Uncertainty, on
the other hand, is like living your life eternally sitting in some cosmic
twilight zone waiting to go out on a date with someone that you're sure you
don't want anything to do with.
In response to the many requests for
insight into how to remain focused during uncertain and scary times, I have
created this lesson on transforming the fear and perceived negativity of
any situation into opportunities for growth, progress,
and achievement.
I began by asking myself this question: "How do you
plan for success in a world filled more with conflicts, surprises,
and uncertainty than with patterns?"
Focusing Strategies During
Uncertain Times is meant to support and empower your creative thinking,
communications, actions, and most importantly your results.
1. Focus
On Others!
Economic and political events throughout the past year have
made people around the world anxious and fearful about their
futures. Because of that fear, people tend to drive into themselves,
and begin to feel isolated, hopeless, and helpless.
In this situation,
the best defense is a good offensive strategy.
Go in the opposite
direction by purposefully expanding your connection with others. Focus on
helping your family, friends, associates, and community to make something
wonderful happen.
Forget about yourself, and focus in on others. The more
you do this, the less you will need to worry about your own
situation. You'll become a source of strength, confidence, and
an inspiration for others to emulate.
2. Focus On
Relationships!
In uncertain times, people have a tendency to become
frightened about the viability of the things they do and the positions
they hold. Don't go there emotionally!
A wise strategic response right
now would be to focus on deepening the power and possibility of all your
relationships - with family, friends, associates, and community.
Every
time you strengthen a relationship, you automatically increase your
opportunities for growth, progress, and achievement.
3. Focus On
Value!
When times are uncertain, you better place a premium on
the creation and delivery of greater value. What people want at all times
is value creation - that is, solutions that help them eliminate their
uncertainties, capture their opportunities, and reinforce their
strengths.
When you focus on providing these three solutions,
growth, progress, and achievement will naturally follow.
4. Focus On
Opportunities!
Because of uncertainty and the roll of the dice this past
year, some things may have disappeared from your life. Some people never
get over this. They keep replaying history and focusing on coulda, woulda,
and shoulda.
A better strategy is to start an entirely new game -
create history by using new ideas, new energies, new tools, and
new resources to focus on new opportunities.
Read this next line a few
times to make sure you completely get the point: Just because you did not see
a good business opportunity when you see one does not mean that you
didn't see one!
Be open and alert by focusing and capitalizing on
opportunity. A big opportunity is available now for achieving far more than
you ever did in the past.
Stay awake and either open or kick the door
in when it knocks!
5. Focus On Progress!
At some point in time,
uncertainty and fear knocks the wind out of all of us. Success and
achievement may not come as easy as they once did. New competitive realities
will either defeat you or reveal new strengths.
Your physical muscles
always get stronger from working against resistance. The same is true for the
muscles in your mind, your spirit, and your character.
Focus on
progress, and treat this whole period of challenge and uncertainty as a time
when you can make your greatest progress.
6. Focus On Today!
The
"future" is uncertain; at best your plans are a hypothetical guess. The only
future that has any reality is the one that you continually create for
yourself through each day's contributions,
achievements, and
results.
Take it one day at a time. Focus on what you can do over
the course of each 24 hours. Plan the day well, maximize
every opportunity, continuously generate value and flawlessly execute your
plan.
7. Focus On Gratitude!
Uncertainty is one of those times
when everyone has to make a fundamental decision: to complain or to be
grateful. When things go south, the consequences of this decision are much
greater.
Complaining only attracts negative thoughts, negative people,
and negative results. There is no inherent value to be found
from complaining.
Gratitude creates and attracts positive thoughts,
positive people, and positive results. It allows for the best
thinking, actions, and results to emerge.
Focus on everything that you
are grateful for - communicate this - and open yourself each day to the best
possible consequences.
A Final Thought
There are certainties in
uncertain times. Even in uncertain times, you must go forward and actively
pursue your goals.
Within that context you will discover abundant
opportunities for growth, progress, and achievement. These opportunities will
allow you to improve your life, your family, your community, and
our world.

===================================== Crying
For Help Online
- by Jim
Edwards
http://www.TheNetReporter.com(c)
Jim Edwards - All Rights
reserved =====================================
Anyone surfing the
Internet for more than a week eventually needs help from someone else.
Whether regarding an online purchase, technical support on computer hardware,
software support or some other type of help, sooner or later
everyone needs assistance.
The way in which you ask for help has
everything to do with how fast and how well you receive assistance. In
the online world where email rules, the following tips will help you get
what you need and get on your way quickly.
* Remember the "person" on the
other end *
When something on your computer or a particular
website doesn't function properly, irritation seems a natural reaction,
especially when you have no clue why things don't work or how to fix them. A
sense of helplessness often leads to feelings of frustration and anger.
However, no matter how upset you get, you must always remember that a live
person will receive your email communication and, in many cases, they
didn't cause your problem directly.
Remember, those email "missiles" that
make you feel better in the short term will almost always come back to haunt
you over the long haul.
When first asking for help, never send notes
with phrases such as "If you don't respond to me within two hours
I'm going to contact my lawyer." or "I sure hope this isn't a scam."
Rarely do such comments produce the cheerful help or assistance you actually
want.
* "Please" and "Thank You" *
Common courtesy goes a long way
towards getting what you want, especially regarding technical support.
Notes with nasty comments put the person on the receiving end in a
bad frame of mind. However, notes with a polite tone sprinkled generously
with "please" and "thank you" will usually receive prompt and courteous
attention. You can always get more severe later if you must.
*
Don't use ALL CAPS *
Using all capital letters in an email rates the same
as SHOUTING in someone's face! Ignorance of this custom online does not
excuse the behavior.
Though you may think typing certain words in ALL
CAPS merely shows emphasis on your part, to a "computer geek" you
will seem rude and offensive. Once you have offended the person from
whom you seek help, your chances of receiving that help diminish
significantly.
* Get to the point *
Everything happens quickly
online. Time ranks number one as the customer support person's scarcest
resource and they don't have time to read long emails to figure out what
you need.
When asking for help, always include your name,
contact information, order information, specific dates and a
clear description of the help or information you need.
Avoid including
any extraneous information that won't contribute directly in assisting
someone in giving you exactly what you need.
Though the Internet and
email may seem like an instant solution to many problems, people still run
the technology. If you need help from another person, don't treat the
person like a machine. You'll get a lot further by doing it
this way.

"New
Year, New Business" by Chris Malta
It wasn't that many years ago that I
had bosses, a 50 hour workweek, and a one hour commute to and from work each
day. I spent very little time with my wife and kids, since I'd leave home
at 7 in the morning, and often didn't get back until 8 or 9 at night. My
weekends we just a blur of frenzied activity, trying to make up for lost time
during the week with my family, and suddenly it was Monday morning again, and
I was on my way back to work.
Today, I'm an owner, and the CEO, of a
highly successful Corporation. I make my own hours, I work from home when I
choose, and I can afford the things I always wanted to give my kids.
Most
importantly, I can afford to give them the time I always
wanted to spend with them.
I actually work more now than I did then,
but I'm working for myself, and for the most part I can pick and choose when
I work, which makes a big difference.
There is an American Dream,
still very much alive and kicking out there, folks. I found it. So can
you.
It's not in a box, or in a book. You can't buy it online.
You won't find it in an infomercial. No one will hand it to you
in exchange for a few easy credit card payments.
You don't need to get
it from somebody else. You already have it.
It's in your heart, and in
your mind. If you have a desire to move beyond your current circumstances, to
make a better life for yourself, to really succeed in this world, you already
have the Dream. It's there, waiting for you, and it's ready to be yours
whenever you want it. You only need to do one thing.
You need to get
started.
I started my company at exactly this time of year, several
years ago. The Holidays were winding down, I was starting to think about
having to pay Christmas credit card bills for the next 8 months or so until I
had to start shopping for the next Christmas, and I realized I was getting
older, but not wiser.
I'd heard that phrase before; "A little older, a
little wiser". I was getting the 'older' part whether I wanted it or not!
However, I didn't seem to be getting any wiser over the years. I was
still 'punching a time clock'. I was still struggling to pay bills, even
though I made a decent living. (Like most people, the more money I got in my
paycheck, the more I spent, and still ended up
struggling!)
It
seemed that with every New Year's Eve, I was making a Resolution that this
year, I was going to do something about it.
This year, I'd start
something of my own. This year, I'd make something work for my family, beyond
my weekly paycheck.
Well, this year turned into next year, and then the
year after that. I never seemed to follow through. I never actually
got started. It's easy to get stuck in that rut, and let the excitement of
that dream always stay Just a bit farther into the future. Just a little
farther down the road. "I'll do it some day", I always thought.
I
think we do things like that because it makes us feel safe, in a way. If we
procrastinate, if we put it off and continue to dream, then the dream is
always safe. It's always out there, in the future somewhere, and it can
continue to give us hope. It'll never go away. Perhaps we're afraid that if
we try, and we fail, then the dream itself is gone, and we won't even
have that to comfort us anymore.
So, we continue to dream, and
continue to let the years slip away, until it really is too late to do
anything about it.
It's a sad thing that something capable of giving us
so much comfort will, for most people, never become a reality, because
we become afraid to actually try.
One December a few years ago, with
New Year's Eve parties coming up, and yet another Resolution made, I finally
took the plunge. I let go of the comfort of the dream, and set out to make it
a reality.
It didn't go well, at first. My online business started
out slowly. I found that I had a lot to learn. I couldn't let it
go, though. I couldn't let the dream fade into nothing, after all those
years of dreaming. So, I kept at it. Little by little, bit by bit, I built my
fledgling business. I learned that it wasn't going to be a situation where I
could start my business, and quit my job two weeks later. I learned
that building a business the right way took time, and a willingness to
learn.
My first year was a definitely a learning process. I got
my Internet business set up, and then I tried many different products and
marketing strategies.
I read materials from lots of different schools of
thought on Internet Marketing. I went through a few different Web
Site Hosting companies, and a couple of Merchant Bankers. I kept at it,
and by the end of the year, I'd made a decent profit. It wasn't enough to
quit my day job over, but it was a good deal of extra Christmas money that
year!
My second year was much better. I knew what to expect from
each month of the year. I was familiar with the trends in product sales
and availability by then.
I started exploring new product brands and new
Marketing directions on the Internet. The business grew steadily.
By
the end of the second year, I followed a brand-new New Year's Resolution, and
formed a new corporation, partnering with an old and trusted friend. The core
business, Internet product sales, was still the same, and still is to this
day. Together with my new business partner, I explored the depth of that core
business, and embarked on some new ventures.
Today, we still
successfully sell brand name products on the Internet. We also successfully
market our own award-winning informational database, and we're developing
some incredible new marketing software and other products that we are
very confident in. We have an excellent team of employees, and we're
growing at a phenomenal rate every year.
Where did it all start? Internet
product sales, that very first year. I strongly believe that selling products
at retail on the Internet is absolutely the best way to get started in
online business. Product sales is the basis for all online Commerce. It's
what ECommerce is, and why ECommerce exists. Learning Internet product sales
gave me the knowledge and experience I needed to go wherever I wanted to go
in online business. For a great number of people, online product sales is the
success they dream of. For me, it was the first part of a badly
needed learning curve that took me from success there, to success in other
areas of the Internet as well.
Why did it all start? Because I finally
took the chance, and went after the dream. I worked at it constantly, and
never gave up. It was nothing more than that. There were no Magic Bullets.
No "Eureka!"
moments. No Secret Formulas. All I did was use common
sense. I ignored all the hucksters out there who were trying to sell
me the Dream In A Box, and listened to those who really
had something
intelligent to say.
If you're interested in a
little free help, I've kept track of all those important things I learned
over the years, and have made them all available for FREE on our company
web site at www.WorldwideBrands.com.
In our
free Resource Center, our free Know How Center, my free EBook and free
articles, you'll find those things you need to know to make the dream work,
the RIGHT way.
Why do we do that? Because there's plenty of room here in
the
American Dream for you too, and we would honestly like to help you
get here.
We're looking forward to an incredible year in 2004. I hope
you are, too. While you're celebrating the New Year, think about turning
all the incredible potential of a brand new year into the start of something
that will change your life forever.
Just get started.
Happy New
Year!
