Happy October to you! Except for the alleged snipers being caught, a
Senator's family killed in a plane crash, and other tragic events around the
world, our family had some true blessings.
Jim's hand is healing and he thinks he will be able to use it when he
"graduates" from the contraption enveloping his hand. You oughta
see it!
Looks like a laser weapon or something!
Our daughter was here over "fall break" from college (I don't remember
having such a thing at midterms) and we really enjoyed her company!--even if
it was cloudy for the exact days she was here--same thing last year!
She'll
never believe us when we say that the Seattle area does have sunshine!
I continue to work toward bringing more money into this home--enough to help
with pet rescue--and I'm not quite there yet, but by next issue, we might be
ready!
I had a birthday and made it through to another year!
Halloween will be upon some of us by the time this reaches you, so we'll
include something special; perhaps a "recipe" or two!
Thanks so much for the contributions that are now coming in. We've
received
so many nice ads that we may need to present some of them in a supplement.
We hope you will visit our sponsors, since it will help you, them and us!
Thanks.

2: Kitten Kabootle's Kubbyhole (catly writings)
THE BEST TOY EVER
By Lauren Merryfield
Upon the phone table he goes, knocking things down irrelevant to cats.
Mikey knows just what he wants. His frenzy is short-lived when he finds
only the plastic box. Oh no! He sees what he wants within that
clear-lidded box, but has not yet figured out how to open it, beholding the
treasure.
Plan B comes forth in his catly mind--bother my ownees. Knock down more
things; that gets them up. Squeak long ones, even put an M at the
beginning; that reeeeeally gets them.
And so it goes, until one of us lifts the lid to the best toy ever!
Back and forth, up and down, over the carpet, through the door, in circles
and other designs, the tiny, red laser beam dances, to sheer delight of all
three cats.
After observing the feline frenzy for several minutes, husband, Jim
concludes that each cat has his/her characteristic manner in which to handle
this elusive red dot.
Jaspur, the bitey one, tries to bite and/or eat the tiny morsel, to no
avail.
Mikey pounces upon it, as if to kill, though the miniscule prey moves on.
Gabrielle, the youngest of the three, still kitteny in many ways, runs
circle after circle around the too-swiftly-darting toy.
Their delight is unanimous! Their inability to eat, squash, or pin down
the
beam seems not to bother them, for whatever it is they really want to
accomplish -- playing with the light -- is an accomplishment in itself.
How might we learn from these cats, with 3 separate ways of handling this
dot in their lives?
We can be determined to find what we want to do and go through a few snags,
if necessary, to get it. We can separate the determination from all the
other thoughts we might have, telling us not to do it; there isn't time; who
cares; it's better for someone else to have it because I don't deserve it; I
don't know how to get it; etc.
We can discover that our goal is similar to that of many others, but when
several of us perceive the same thing, we come up with individually
different ways to respond to it and make it our own, with our own unique way
of making whatever it is happen.
We can take the one thing some of us have in common and share it, taking
turns.
We can discover which ways work for us and which do not; eliminating those
means that may harm another in some way.
And the list goes on.
Let's learn from Jaspur, Mikey and Gabrielle, as they are totally
themselves, doing their own thing, with the best toy ever!
(Editor's note: The last I knew, housecat.com has these laser light toys.)

Hello,
My name is Anne Moss and I am a fellow member of the CWA (listed in the
members directory under the Hebrew version of my name: El-Hashahar, Anat).
This email is to tell you about a newsworthy story concerning cats, people
and the
internet. It's a story of how people from all over the world united
together through the internet for one special cause. To rescue a feral
(stray) cat in Texas. This effort has now developed into an organization
to
provide current research and statistics on the cost-effectiveness of spay
and neutering pets. As well as, to supporting proper feral cat management.
I hope you can help this cause by using this story as a vehicle to bring
much needed education to your readers. I am trying to reach as many
writers
(reporters and journalists) as possible with this press release I have
written. If you think this story may interest you, please read on.
-------------------------------------------------------------
My name is Anne Moss and I am the owner and webmaster of
www.TheCatSite.com
This is the story about how one post on the Internet led to a group effort
to save the life of one feral cat in Amarillo, Texas. Not only was the cat
saved, but as a result of the rescue effort, a joint research project is now
underway to form an organization that will help save so many more strays and
feral cats. Not only in Amarillo, but all over the world. It's a
wonderful, heart-warming story about how the Internet can work to help bring
people together while working toward a common goal of helping animals in
need.
Once a month for a little over a year now, I post headlines related to cats
in need on my website. I do a search over the Internet looking for
cat-related stories. I post them for my members in the hopes that they
will
read them, think about the content, and perhaps become more involved or
interested in the plight of animals in their own areas. A little over a
month ago when I posted a link to an article I found from the Amarillo Globe
News, I had no idea how involved they would really become.
It was an editorial by a local Texas journalist, David Horsley. The
article
dealt with his frustrations toward a male cat that had, in his words, been
"terrorizing the neighborhood". When his efforts to work with
the city's
Animal Control to trap and rid the neighborhood of this feral cat came up
short, he voiced his frustration by writing what was intended to be a
humorous piece about the terrorizing cat. The original article was titled:
"Takes more than can of tuna to trap Osama." He had named this
cat "Osama
Bin Laden."
After following the link and reading the article, many of our members
emailed Mr. Horsley expressing concern for the cat, outrage at his behavior
towards it, and many also tried to suggest calmer alternatives to deal with
the problem. Mr. Horsley's alternative at the time (according to the
article) was to "hurl objects at it." One woman in particular
stood up and
took issue with Mr. Horsley. She spent a great deal of her time and effort
in trying to help come up with resources to help this misunderstood creature
(the cat, not the reporter). This woman's name is Ms. Laurie Goldstein.
Although not even geographically close to Texas, Laurie decided that this
feral deserved a chance, and she and her husband Gary spent their own time
and money making countless phone calls trying to track down what Laurie
affectionately later would term "Amarillo's Crazy Cat Lady."
They finally
succeeded in tracking down a woman that many in Amarillo consider to be the
area's finest friend to all pets and stray animals, Ms. Judi Glidewell.
Judi runs a superior boarding facility and works diligently with the Humane
Society to adopt stray animals into loving homes. (Laurie and Gary are
Senior Vice Presidents of a NY-based brokerage firm).
Eventually, Judi and the Misguided Reporter hooked up, Osama was renamed
Samoa (Laurie's idea -- uses the same letters, just cleverly rearranged) and
Samoa was safely trapped not too long after. Samoa has since had his
shots,
been proven to already be neutered (!), and has turned out to be a sweet,
loving cat, and should hopefully be adopted very shortly!]
During this process, Mr. Horsley came to realize that his original concept
of feral cats was quite off the mark. With a bit of education as to the
extent of the problem nationwide (and in Amarillo in particular), he had a
change of heart: Mr. Horsley aided Judi in safely trapping Samoa. He even
offered to pay for the neutering and vaccinations! He went further, too,
writing a follow-up piece mentioning on-line feral cat resources. It
really
is an incredible story when everything is laid out before you. The
original
post that started it all is located here:
http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11240
As a result of the involvement in saving Samoa. Laurie and another member
of The Cat Site.com, Christine O'Keefe, Ph.D. have collaborated to create a
resource-oriented website, providing educational materials to local
communities interested in lowering both the cost of animal control and the
numbers of stray pets and feral cats.
It really is too long for just a press release. But I believe it would
make
a wonderful feature article and give you an excellent vehicle to educate
your readers on the plight facing feral cats and stray pets nationwide.
Without spay/neuter programs for dogs and cats and Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR)
programs in place for feral cats, the outlook is bleak for these animals and
they are subjected to untold dangers while roaming free. According to the
Humane Society of the U.S., approximately 10 million dogs and cats enter
shelters each year. And each year approximately 4 - 5 million are
euthanized. The cost to the States is in excess of $50 million/year!
It
has been shown that in tested areas with proper programs in place, these
numbers drop dramatically. The need for education is imperative, and I
hope
you will make this human (animal) interest story your own way to help try
and stop this problem.

HALLOWEEN AND PETS
Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for pets, according to
several animal protection organizations, including the American Humane
Society, Jacksonville.com reports.
The groups advise owners to confine dogs away from trick-or-treaters. Black
cats, often abducted before Halloween, should be confined days before the
holiday.
Don't share any candy with pets, especially chocolate. Candy is toxic for
animals and can cause vomiting, restlessness, heart disturbances and even
death. Tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if
swallowed.
An owner should not dress a pet in costume unless positive the animal does
not mind.

The Pecan story
We had been hearing something outside that sounded like a small cat meowing
for a couple of days but never could se anything. We had come home from
doing some errands when my wife caught a glimpse of something up our huge
pecan tree. It was a little cat we had been hearing. The little
thing
couldn't have been more than a few weeks old.
It was way up the tree ion a limb. It couldn't get down and was just
crying
her little eyes out.
I told my wife that I would try to climb the tree and get the cat. My wife
didn't want me to do it since I was suffering from Osteoporosis and if I
fell it would probably break a few bones. The only limb to grab a hold of
was about eight feet above my head. There was however, an indention in the
tree about four feet up. I got my wife and daughter to heave me up far
enough to get my foot in the indention and push myself up enough to grab the
limb. I pulled myself up and sat on the limb. I told my wife then
there
was no way I was getting down. I pulled myself over to where I heard the
little kitty crying. I then stuck my hand out to see if I could feel it
and
the darn thing jumped out of the tree. All I heard was a big thump.
I
thought the kitty was dead but my wife said it got up and shot across the
yard and climbed another tree. Great! The cat is up another tree and
I am
here in this huge pecan tree with no way down.
My daughter said she was going to call the fire department. I hollered out
for her not to but it was to late. I said that there was no way I was
going
to be embarrassed by the fire department getting me out of a tree.
I told my wife I was coming down one way or another. I felt around and
found a small limb that I thought would hold my weight if I dropped down.
The only problem was I was still going to be several feet above the ground.
It probably wouldn't take much to break one of my bones. I dropped down
anyway and was just hanging there for dear life. My wife and daughter
grabbed my legs and told me to let go! I kept telling them no but they
pulled me down anyway. LOL
When I got down the fire department showed up. They wanted to know where
the blind man was that was stuck in the tree. I told them that the blind
man got down on his own. They were disappointed that they came to get a
blind man out of a tree and now only had a little kitty.
The firemen didn't really know how to go about getting the kitty out of the
tree. One of them said to try shooting water up the tree. So that is
what
they did.
As soon as the first shot of water went into the tree, the little kitty came
jumping down. When it hit the ground it shot across the yard again but
this
time went into the horse pasture. All my wife and daughter could see is
three horses jumping around. They all thought the little kitty had been
stomped. However, it came running out from under them and my daughter took
after it. She finally caught it and brought it over to me. It was so
small it fit in the palm of one hand.
We took it in the house and cleaned it off and tried to feed it. It was so
small I don't even think it knew how to eat on its own yet. My wife got
out
a straw and fed the kitty with it. WE decided to keep it for a few days
until it was able to eat. Well that few days has ended up in us deciding
to
keep it. We have named it Pecan and she is the cutest thing in the world.
She loves us and plays all the time now. She is also eating like a horse!
Regards,
Tony

Capability (What Can You Do?)
What is capability? What can you do? What is can?
You say, "I wish I could do that. But I can't." Sometimes
the thing you
desire seems most evasive and elusive to you. You may seem to think that
you need money or something else that is external to you for you to be able
to achieve your desire. And because this external thing is away from you
and you don't have it, you think that you are doomed because even that seems
elusive. So you are stuck in a vicious circle. You accept that, you
fear
it.
But before you accept something that has absolutely no value to you, take
another look. Fear is a thing we are conditioned to accept without
question, yet it has absolutely no value. Next time you accept fear, ask
yourself what value it really has for you. Escape is not a value.
There is
nowhere to run. Eventually, you will be found and you will have to face
yourself. Running away from a problem is an idea that stems from the
illusion that there is a you with a problem, and a you that can escape the
you with the problem.
Insane? Yep! The first step to getting out of a problem is knowing
and
accepting that you are the problem, and then you become the solution.
Nothing outside changes, but as you change, a new outside replaces the old.
The law of attraction and the law of cause and effect work this way.
For now, let us define capability. What is can?
Everyone has things that they can do now that they could not do before.
You
can now walk while as a child you could not. The ground never changed, but
you did. You can now read while you once could not. The English
language
never changed, but you did. At one time, Bill Gates could not write
software, now he can. The world did not change, Bill did. At one
time,
Jesus could not perform miracles, then he did. Miracles did not change,
Jesus did. At one time the Buddha was not enlightened, then he was.
The
ways of the universe did not change, the Buddha did.
Do you get the picture? There are a million things that a person can do
now
that they could not do years ago. Why?
It is never those things that changed. What changed was the idea that this
person had of himself or herself. Have you seen the movie The Matrix?
When
Neo changed his idea of himself, he was able to do the undoable. It is so
with everyone.
So what is can? What is capability. It is nothing more than a shift
in
what you think you are. What You Really Are is a being with infinite
possibilities. Everyone is. We are all literally an idea. As
such,
success is not something we can chase and get, it is something that we
attract by the persons we become. We become those persons by changing the
idea of what we think we are.
The problem is not with the world. The problem, if there is one, is with
your recognition of yourself and your world. The way you perceive and
interpret yourself and your world is a system.
Change that system, through seeking new truths, and you change your world.
To put it in another way, on earth you are a being that has experiences.
These experiences are determined by your thoughts, which are determined by
your perceptions. And these experiences are experienced through
perception.
It is a cycle. The key here is that perception is a learnt system.
You
learnt your own way of perception as you grew up.
Whatever you accepted as true from your parents, friends, teachers, and so
on, is what builds your framework of perception. Perception is a learnt
system. You learn it, and you can just as easily unlearn it. You
unlearn
it by replacing it with a new system, and you get a new system by seeking
new truths from books, guides, your higher self, and so on. The world that
you perceive is perceived differently by the next guy. We are all seeing
an
illusion, an interpretation of energy activity that we are the creators of.
The Real world is seen through vision, not perception. And vision only
comes when you finally drop all your judgement of what you see, when you let
it tell you what it is instead of you saying what it is. But that is
another story all together.
You are in charge of 'can', and no one else. People can tell you that you
can't, all day long, until they grow hoarse and lose their voices. It will
have absolutely zero effect on you. Unless you accept it. What did
you
accept as a child? Do you like it?
Then un-accept it. Change. Re-create yourself. Have a new idea
of who you
are!
There is a lot of help available nowadays that was never there before. We
now have a deeper understanding of our universe and the way it works. Web
sites such as
www.imagesofone.com
get us headed in the right way within a click of a mouse. Authors and
speakers now grace our talk shows and bookstores giving us exactly what we
need just at the right time. All that is left is for you to make the
step.

MISCELLANEOUS CAT ANATOMY FACTOIDS:
^..^ Here's a collection of "fascinating facts about your

--Cats have 30 vertebrae, 5 more than humans have.
--A cat's field of vision is about 185 degrees.
--Cats have 32 muscles that control the outer ear (compared to human's 6

--Cats step with both left legs, then both right legs when they walk or run.
(like a camel)
--In relation to their body size, cats have the largest eyes of any mammal.
--Most cats do not have eyelashes.
--A domestic cat can sprint at about 31 miles per hour.
--A kitten will typically weigh about 3 ounces at birth.
--The typical male housecat will weigh between 7 and 9 pounds, slightly less
for female housecats. (well, I guess all of my kitties are "above
average!")
--Cats take between 20-40 breaths per minute.
--Normal body temperature for a cat is 102 degrees F.
--A cat's normal pulse is 140-240 beats per minute, with an average of 195.
--Cat's urine glows under a black light.
--Cats lose almost as much fluid in the saliva while grooming themselves as
they do through urination.

This is an Irish poem written in the 9th century.
It is included in a book called "How the Irish Saved Civilization" by
Thomas
Cahill.
--PANGUR BAN MY CAT AND I
I and Pangur Ban my cat,
'Tis a like task we are at;
Hunting mice is his delight,
Hunting words I sit all night.
'Tis a merry thing to see
At our tasks how glad are we...
When at home we sit and find
Entertainment to our mind...
So in peace our tasks we ply,
Pangur Ban my cat and I;
In our arts we find our bliss,
I have mine and he has his.

Purrs and prayers - for centuries the two have gone together!

Eyeballs
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups peanut butter
1 lb icing sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
12 ozs white chocolate
Cream the butter and peanut butter together. Add the icing sugar and
vanilla and blend thoroughly. Shape into small 1-inch balls and refrigerate
on waxed paper for half an hour. Melt the white chocolate (you can use a
microwave for this). With a toothpick, dip the "eyeballs" into
the
chocolate, covering all but a small circle on the top. Let cool on waxed
paper.
Makes around 40 eyeballs
