:
: Hi, all you cat-loving home-business PURRSons,
:
: Congratulations to all of us here at CATLINES and to all of our
: catly readers!  This is issue 12.  We've made it a year!  Our
: first issue of Volume 2 will be published March 15, (the Ides of
: March) 2003, in a mood of celebration, confidence, and a sense of
: honor.  We thank you all for hanging in with us in spite of some
: first-year "lessons," and, with your help, CATLINES will be among
: the best-known and most-loved ezines on the crowded Internet.
:
: We began with 51 subscribers and now are upwards of 600, at this
: writing.  Yes, there are many on the Internet who will say that
: an online newsletter isn't worth anything unless it has thousands
: and thousands of subscribers.
:
: If making money is all one is about, there may be some
: mathematical factuality in this.  However, since our PURRpose
: encompasses more than simply making money, we're happy to have a
: few loyal subscribers who actually read our ezine and follow
: through on some of it's info.  At CATLINES, we're not into just
: collecting names so that the numbers look good.  In other words,
: here at CATLINES, quality is more important than quantity.
:
: Several encouraging changes have come about with CATLINES since
: it's kitten-hood, besides bringing on more subscribers.  There
: are editor/publishers out there who appreciate our ezine; there
: are folks out there who are quite well-known and bringing in
: green stuff daily who have endorsed CatLINES and it's concept of
: bringing a favorite passion (cats) with home-business, which can
: improve the quality of life for cats and their humans.  This
: support is so much appreciated, contrasted by some who might
: consider our ezine a "silly little club."  Yes, one who
: subscribed from us was so out of touch with what we have here
: they will now miss out on more than they'll ever know.  Our
: "silly little club" is going to be the most informed group of
: cat-loving home-business PURRSons the Internet has to offer.
: Please help make this happen.
:
: For starters, a very simple thing each one of you can do is to
: bring on just one subscriber; we'd double in size and thought.
: Come on, let's do it!

: 2: Kitten Kabootle's Kubbyhole (catly writings)
:
: Cats *Everywhere* Cats
: by Lauren Merryfield
:
: I have been a member of the Cat Writers' Association for several
: years now, but had never attended one of it's annual conferences.
:
: Further, I've been to local cat shows, but never to the
: International Cat Show sponsored by the Cat Fanciers'
: Association.
:
: Upon discovering that both of these catly events would be
: happening in Houston, Texas, in November of 2002, I had a talk
: with my husband, Jim, about Christmas gifts--wouldn't attending
: these two special events make a PURRfect gift for both of
: us--from both of us?  He agreed, and, off we went!
:
: We were too late for reservations at the main hotel, however, an
: alternative hotel was able to accommodate us at the Cat Fanciers'
: rate.
:
: Very soon during our stay, we discovered, by the sounds of "meow"
: emanating from cat carriers in hallways, in the lobby, in the
: elevator, on rides to and from the hotel, that some members of
: the Cat Fanciers' Association were our hotel-mates.
:
: Following are just some of my responses to my first time at these
: conferences.
:
: I've been a CWA member for two years and this was my first
: conference!
:
: Names of  some of our members were familiar to me, but I can't
: say that I *knew* anyone.  Introductions around the room at the
: beginning of the conference might have helped, though most of the
: people in attendance already knew each other--A little daunting
: for a first-timer.
:
: I felt a stressful sense of ambiguity and even some guilt in not
: attending all of the seminars.  Reasons for such delinquency:
: 1: Two seminars happening simultaneously.
: 2: Probably really number one--cat show! cat show! cat show!
: 3: Met the family of an epal of two years who has eleven cats;
: need I say more?   Yes! there's more! Meeting them Was wonderful!
:  And, get this, they took us to the Katz's Deli, for real!
: Excellent human food!
:
: I enjoyed the banquet.  I appreciated being present as deserving
: cat-writers received commendation for their efforts.  I further
: noticed that the awards were spread around, except in a couple
: deserving cases!
:
: Some brand new members were first-time winners! This gave me hope
: for the future, being a relatively new member myself.
:
: Then there was that cat show, beckoning me magnetically through
: the duration of my stay.
:
: Since I personally feel a terrible internal conflict regarding
: Miss America-type shows for humans, plus, considering myself to
: be a potential Meowmmy to any cats--all cats--I refused to focus
: on the judging and some of the well, catty remarks during bus
: rides which would be disparaging to so many homeless cats and
: even my own dear ones!
:
: However, I loved just being in a roomful of over 1 thousand cats!
: They were all so beautiful, though some of the most overly-
: trained cats I've ever met!
:
: Meeting some of them was such a privilege; for meeting any
: cats--all cats--is a privilege to me!
:
: Being a 60's, non-conformist type, I shy away from protocol in
: favor of spontaneity and creativity.  The cat show was far too
: orderly for me, though a remote aspect of myself understands
: this necessity.
:
: In all honesty, I was disappointed not to hear "Attention in ring
: seven! Cat out!" and a scramble to see who could get all the
: doors closed soonest. The daydream of that "cat out" coming to
: me, giving me the opportunity to snuggle and smuggle him/her out
: to a life of freedom was fantastic, though short-lived, as the
: "kittens in premiership, ready in ring 3," "Will cats 729 through
: 735 please be brought to ring nine, with the exception of number
: 731," brought me back to cat show reality.
:
: "Kittens in premiership?  What does that mean?" I asked of a
: patient cat-shower whose American wire-hair cat was being touch
: by me for the first time.
:
: "Cats in championship are not neutered and most likely bred,
: while cats in premiership have been spayed or neutered," I was
: informed.
:
: Though I love any cats--all cats--it was enlightening and
: entertaining to meet a hairless Sphinx cat, an American wire-hair
: cat, and a prize-winning Balinese cat for the first time.  Last
: Train to Georgia, nicknamed Chooch, had been in the previous
: day's paper, so I understood the ownee's pride.  (They only think
: they own the cats, right?)
:
: On the front burner of my mind, however, were the facts that
: other papers throughout the world were reporting cruelty to cats,
: homelessness of cats, euthanasia of cats for lack of room, and
: cats becoming road-kill.  The mixed feelings never escaped me!
:
: Psychologically, I was able to bring my angst down a notch by
: PURRchasing a shirt stating "Without pawprints in it, life is
: just not worth living."
:
: The feeling, among cats, may not be mutual, but in many cases in
: fact, they are reciprocal; we need cats as much as they need us
: to enrich each others' lives.
:
: One embarrassing event occurred on my second visit to the cat
: show.  My husband, Jim, and I were snooping down Meow Mall, the
: vendors' area, when suddenly I needed to sit, right now!  This is
: quite the norm for those of us with fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue
: syndrome.
:
: We immediately scurried to ring 2 where I nearly collapsed.  I
: heard a woman with kids in tow say to them, "I think she's having
: a seizure; we better go get help."
:
: I thought this odd, having gone to school with kids who had
: seizures and there is usually quite a lot of unusual commotion
: during such an event.
:
: As I was dismissing the seemingly incongruous concern, I heard
: "Attention in ring 2.  There's a medical emergency in ring 2,"
: though stated matter-of-factly, I felt the creepy-crawlies!  I was
: in ring 2.  What was happening unbeknownst to me?
:
: Imagine the shock when I was suddenly surrounded by medical
: personnel, at least one CWA member, and the vendor of a shirt my
: husband had just PURRchased.
:
: "Can you talk?"  "Are you alone?"  "Well where *is* your
: husband?" the last question was asked critically.  I explained
: that someone must have heard me say to Jim what seems pretty
: normal for us and they heard it as an emergency.
:
: Jim, being not at all unattentive,  was PURRusing the arena so
: that we could make better and quicker decisions on where to go
: next in all the surrounding catliness, thus, he had not deserted
: me.
:
: Having been naughty at the deli in eating dessert, (my blood
: sugar was probably too high, though I am not diabetic), so I may
: have looked worse off than I really was.
:
: It was relieving to know that humans and felines were all in good
: hands at the show, and now we had a bit of humor to write home
: about.
:
: Oh yes!  Just one more thing!  Though we met some of the
: greatest cats in the whole wide world,  there is a triple tie for
: first best cats -- as demonstrated in a wonderful home-coming
: reunion -- Jaspur, Mikey and Gabrielle, never to be show cats but
: they sure put on a great and loving cat show for us as we dumped
: our exhausted bodies through our front door!

:
: Endorsement, The Cat's Meow In Home Business
: by Lauren Merryfield
:
: An idea was germinating in my mind for quite a long time before I
: made the decision to give birth to CATLINES, an ezine for
: cat-loving home-business persons.  I figured that if there were
: others like me out there--people who truly loved cats and were
: concerned about their welfare--and wanted to work at home, (be
: your own boss, do what you love to do, be there for your family
: when they needed you, forget about pesky traffic problems and
: road-ragers, handle doctor appointments, errands, classes, etc,
: while working around them, working at night if you're a
: night-owl; the list goes on)--then I wanted to help such people.
:
: Starting from scratch, I knew it would be a possibly lengthy
: process in getting CATLINES up and going, but I was willing to
: take the opportunity, and to see how well things were in a year's
: time.  Then I would make the decision to keep going or call it
: quits.
:
: Some of my earliest subscribers know that we had hosting
: problems, computer problems, illness in the family, and other
: snags during this past year, however, we did not quit.
:
: In fact, we changed hosts, acquired a new computer, and the
: health issues are being met as they occur.
:
: I gained subscribers by word of mouth, my email signature,
: placing ads in other ezines, and more.  However, after attending
: a webcast on list-building, I now know that endorsement of each
: others' ezines, websites and products is the best way to grow on
: the Internet.
:
: The webcast, entitled "How to build a huge, profitable opt-in
: list in 1/4 of the time" hosted by Jason Potash,
:
http://www.picktheirbrains.com
:   http://www.ezineannouncer.com
: was held the evening of February fifth of this year.  This was
: a first for me so my excitement rose, the nearer the time came.
:
: Panelists included:
: Joel Christopher,
:
http://www.masterlistbuilder.com
:   http://successaccess.com
: Frank Garon,
:   http:/www.internetcashplanet.com
: Diane Hughes,
:
http://www.probiztips.com
: Chris Stringum,
: and Paul Myers
:
http://www.talkbiznews.com .
:
: Members of the webcast were encouraged to submit questions
: beforehand. I was one of them.
:
: Jason Potash: "A question came in from Lauren Merryfield.  She is
: the publisher of CATLINES a newsletter, I'm going to read this
: question here and see if we can give her some advice.  This is
: what Lauren writes: I have an ezine called CATLINES which
: contains info for both cat-lovers and work-at-home entrepreneurs.
: I'm trying to do two separate subjects and bring them together.
: So far, I've attracted 500 or so subscribers (more now) in about
: ten months.  What is the best way to get subscribers in my
: field of interest (cats) and attract home-business subscribers,
: too?  Any suggestions on combining these two interests in ways
: that would appeal to both?
:
: Now, Paul, I know that you've done a lot of work in building
: highly-targeted lists and, of anybody I know, you probably have
: the most knowledge in building lists quite quickly that are in
: nontraditional type markets.  What advice can you give Lauren in
: looking to combine an ezine for cat-lovers and work-at-home
: entrepreneurs, any advice, suggestions, words of wisdom in that
: respect?"
:
: Paul Myers: "Yeah, for one thing, that's an interesting
: challenge--that particular combination of topics. Being somebody
: who happens to have a work-at-home business and a cat, I can think
: of a couple of things that might work.
:
: A thing to keep in mind when you combine niches, and you're going
: to publish something for those people, it's much easier, in the
: traditional sense for example, if you're talking about
: programming in Purl and also email automation.  Those are
: actually two different niches, but, when you combine them,
: there's a very broad easily identifiable market.
:
: With something like this, you're talking about a professional
: interest and mixing it with a very personal interest that isn't
: directly related, but it is a great way to attract the very
: specific type of market.
:
: Viral activity of any kind, telling people, pass this along to
: anybody you know who works at home and also has a cat, it may
: sound a little silly,to everybody in the world except your
: subscribers; that's all you really care about.  So, I would say,
: in order to do this, you could do things like, maybe an article
: called Who's The Boss.  Anybody in your market is going to
: immediately identify with the question who's in charge, you or
: the cat?  I've a 75-pound dog and a 7-and-a-half-pound cat, you
: ask who's in charge?
:
: Humor is going to be just a really good, very powerful way to
: connect with those people.  Stories about how some people turn to
: their cat for company during the day because they just
: don't make the time to get out and deal with other people, or
: maybe they're just starting their businesses and don't feel that
: they can make the time.  It's a bad decision, but a lot of people
: make it.
:
: Find the areas where it overlaps.  It's going to be very hard to
: find parts where your cat is really involved in your business,
: except peripherally.
:
: And those peripheral incidents can be very, very funny.
: Something, maybe articles like, for example, Who's The Boss, or
: Me And My Cat, Inc--things that you can get put up on cat
: websites or, and/or home-business websites.
:
: If they're funny, even people who don't have cats will read them,
: will enjoy what you're talking about.  They'll appreciate the
: personal aspect of your communication, and, if they identify with
: you as a person, they're much more likely to subscribe and to
: actually read what you're sending out."
:
: Jason Potash: "Good point, and I think that there's nothing wrong
: about being a little bit different; going against the grain and
: actually coming out with an ezine that appeals to a market that
: combines two markets, and obviously there will be some overlap
: and, let's be honest, the actual market in terms of home-based
: entrepreneurs and cat-lovers, where the cross-over point is,
: could be the quality of subscribers is much less that may want to
: get involved  in an ezine of that type, but you could have a very
: highly-targeted list and obviously, attracting both types of markets
: obviously to credit yourself amongst other types of ezines that
: are out there, because, let's be honest, there's quite a few cat
: ezines out there, I'm quite sure.  And also, there are a ton of
: home-business-related, biz opp-type ezines, and the rate of
: competition is quite high.
:
: Hey, Joel, I know that in terms of building targeted lists,
: that's something you talk about, target your market, that sort of
: thing, any comments for anybody listening today who was thinking
: about, even starting a vanilla-type ezine or or building a
: vanilla-type opt-in list, where they're looking at they're
: looking at following the same road and trying to attract
: Internet-marketing subscribers or small business subscribers; any
: words of advice in terms of going through that process and
: usually coming to the crossroads and saying this is what I'm
: going to talk about in my ezine; here are the types of
: subscribers that I want to attract.  Any comments?"
:
: Joel Christopher: "Well, the way I would advise the person who
: was thinking about getting started is this: you really have to
: define your target market, not just to the demographics, meaning
: who they are, their sex, their age bracket, their income, but
: also especially their psychographics, meaning what are their
: pains? Why would they buy from you if this were the topic you
: want to talk about?  Because, really, people have a strong
: tendency to polarize to your ideas because they have some kind of
: pain; some kind of a problem that you, through your writing,
: through your ezine or tips or newsletter or list, has a way of
: solving that or them.
:
: Now they're also looking for results, so if you can focus on the
: type of problems or pain that they have, and find solutions for
: them, then you're going to have a really targeted market.  Not
: just as to who they are, but why they want to be part of your
: list."
:
: Paul Myers: "Can I throw something in and, in response to that
: part?"
:
: Jason Potash: "Sure.  Please do, Paul."
:
: Paul Myers: "The cat angle is the personal look, but Jason, when
: you remarked that you're talking in smaller demographics,
: consider that there's at least 50 million home-based businesses
: in the world this is just picking out a number off the top of my
: head, I guarantee you it's at least 50 million, let's assume one
: out of five of those people has a cat.  That's ten million
: potential subscribers; that is not a small niche."
:
: Jason Potash: "Very true.  I was referring to the overlap of ,
: yeah, that's true, I mean, how many small business owners have
: cats?  I'm sure I'm sure you could actually go and run that
: somewhere and do a cross query, if you will, and find out if...
: In the chat room here, just think I know.  People are raggin' on
: me because we're talking about cats, but, bear in mind that the
: principle that we're talking about today, and leave cats out of
: the picture, it applies to any target market.  If you're looking
: at attracting, you know, gardeners who play golf or, home-buyers
: who enjoy sailing, or, home-owners with an income of hundred
: thousand dollars or more, who enjoy going on exotic cruises,
: whatever it might be, I mean, the concepts are much the same, so
: open your mind and let's think about how you can apply these
: tactics that Paul and Joel have discussed, and apply them to your
: own target market. Right here with you, Paul, I mean, I think
: that it is a huge market, obviously smaller than just targeting
: small business owners alone, but, having that your flavor will
: help you in attracting some subscribers you want to attract."
:
: Paul Myers: "With the Internet, there are very few truly small
: niches.  You're talkin' 300 or 400 million people, globally, that
: can receive email.
:
: Probably more than that, at this point.  I don't care how your
: market is, you're going to have at least ten thousand potential
: subscribers, and the more specific it is, the more likely they
: are to congregate in easily-identifiable places.  The more
: enthusiastic they are, the more likely they are to attract
: something that addresses their interests.  It's easier to build a
: very niched focus list quickly than it is to build a general
: list.  'Cause there's less competition and more passion on the
: part of the subscribers."
:
: Jason Potash: "I agree one hundred percent.  Excellent advice
: there...."
